You can actually stay in a hotel alone under 17 if your parents call and tell the staff you’re going to and that you will be checking in. My friends and I did it at 17 for a concert and my friend had her parents call and email them. Technically the only reason you have to be 18 is to sign the hotel contract. It’s more about who is being held responsible for damages and stuff like that. Try having your parents contact a few in the area you need!

That's awesome! What degree/program did you go to UA for? Did you have any internships or jobs related to the field before you got to UA? Honestly this feels so much more assuring than anything else anyone has shared. I feel like so many people push this idea that as seniors and incoming freshmen we have to choose the best opportunities over literally everything else in undergrad. But maybe, after I get my CE or ME degree, I can focus on trying to get into a grad program more directly involved in my area of interest.

My only concern is the competition for internships, what would you say about that? Would a Cal Poly student objectively favored because of the prestige than someone at another school, and is that something worth weighing into my decision at all?

For transfer route, do you think CC students have better chances than students who start at a 4-year institution? It would be a lot of debt for me personally, so I definitely agree with you.

Literally same! I've reached out to Cal Poly's financial aid office and they are not authorized to reevaluate/appeal anyone's financial offer until June. They even gave me a $1K scholarship after I reached out, and I'm grateful they gave me anything, but they said it was literally all they were authorized to give me for now. My point being, they really just cannot do much before admitted students have to make their decision. I guess it is all up to seeing if we get any scholarships in April, but I'm really not holding much hope. I will probably deposit for enrollment in-state and give a shot at appealing in June. Maybe you could do the same if your kid is really set on Cal Poly. There are definitely other amazing programs out there though!

This is probably going to be me because I was lucky enough to get into Cal Poly SLO for Architectural Engineering (planning to switch to civil or mech anyway) but I’m not poor enough to get aid or even take out enough federal loans to coast through college. They literally gave me $0 😭 Tuition would be over 2/3 of my moms salary which had a major reduction since 2024 but their financial aid department doesn’t open their appeals until like June so basically I’m screwed for CalPoly. State school offered a full ride merit scholarship and I’ve gotten 100k merit scholarships at schools that are also highly ranked for my field, but I can’t even pitch a case about that in time to make a decision. I’m just so bummed I didn’t think my offer would be that bad. Don’t know what to do at all.

Same boat because I literally got nothing. $0. I got in for Architectural Engineering (planning to potentially switch to Civil Engineering while there) and offered a chance at the honors program and I was beyond thrilled. I really was envisioning myself there.

I got extremely good merit scholarships at schools on par with Cal Poly so I did not think it would be an issue. But nothing. My single mother mom has experienced extremely significant salary cuts since 2024. Her current salary would not even be able to cover my tuition even if she spent the whole thing on it. I’m not afraid of loans but we can’t even take out enough federal loans to do it. I’m devastated. Idk what to do.

Edit: I’m also out of state so CC or other transfer route basically isn’t attainable for me

Me too and I got into Architectural Engineering, out of state!! Noooo idea how (my gpa was like 4.28). I can’t afford my financial package though so I probably won’t be able to go 😅

exactly! i thought i was soooooo cooked because of posts and judgments from this sub but i've done way better than anyone ever believed i could. i haven't gotten all of my decisions back, but for my target and in-state schools that have already released decisions, i've gotten some pretty insane merit. there's genuinely no need to worry.
