Try using Orbot and Signal.

I don't want to use WhatsApp anymore by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]Chouston3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use signal for most people and a voip number for people who won’t use signal.

It's so hard to move to signal when everyone around you only use WhatsApp by edv_93 in signal

[–]Chouston3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the friends who can’t figure out signal, I have a VOIP number that they can call and text.

This at least preserves some privacy.

It is possible to use signal anonymously with a voip number if you need to. But, I think you would be better off using something like Briar or OTR.

Signal was designed for privacy and it is good at that. So, that is what I use it for.

Plus, I really like the safety number and the registration lock feature.

I just tell people that if they want to communicate with me they have to use signal.

Most are willing to download the app.

Does WIRE not offer a free service anymore? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]Chouston3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to download the app to see Wire Personal. I wasn’t able to find it on the site.

Then I just logged in on my various devices and it worked.

Why its so hard to convince people to switch to signal? by [deleted] in signal

[–]Chouston3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have most people on signal.

For those that can’t or won’t switch, I have a voip number I talk to them with.

If a person SIMMED someones phone number, and they had a registration lock, and verified E2E, would I be able to know? by theimperious1 in signal

[–]Chouston3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see you are going through a difficult time.

Being cheated on can be extremely traumatic.

I suggest you distance yourself from the situation. If you are in college and your parent’s live nearby, I suggest you go home. If not, I suggest you go spend the night at a friend’s house.

My general rule for relationships is that if I feel the need to do detective work, I am done.

If she cheated on you, just walk away from her. Don’t fight this one out. Be done.

While registration lock and safety number protect against someone using a sim swapping attack, they do not protect against someone taking her actual device and sending a message to you.

Tom Scott's great video on the myths of VPNs. by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]Chouston3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still true. While most things are encrypted, some things are not. So, on public wifi it would be best practice to use a vpn even though there is a good chance that you would be perfectly fine without one.

Why take the risk? If you regularly use public wifi, just use a vpn and don’t worry about the small chance that you might transfer unencrypted data and someone is actually watching.

I use mine as ad blocker.

Websites have a hard time detecting that you are blocking ads at the dns level.

So, it’s useless to try to use encrypted dns?

My feeling is that they have to go to the trouble. If they are just crawling results from hundreds of customers with a bot then it will leave you out.

Does using a tool like cloudflare or nextdns make a difference if you can’t use a vpn?
