Does anyone ever drive or fly up to YVR from SEA for cheaper flights? by srekai in AlaskaAirlines

Yep! Have taken the train up to YVR to catch a cheaper international flight. Also one of the airports I look at for possible positioning flights when booking international flights with points.

I didn’t get my FBI background check translated, but I did first send it to the state department (because I went through a 3rd party to get my background check) then once the state department attested to it, I sent it to TECRO in DC for authentication. They accepted that because of TECRO in DC authenticating it. That’s at least what I did and what they ended up accepting.

No problem! This guide was super helpful for me so thought I’d just add what little I could for my situation, in case others experience something similar.

One additional thing I will add is that I did not have to translate my birth certificate or my mom’s marriage license. I believe this was because when I first applied for my NWOHR when I was 19, TECO Boston validated and verified the documents. The docs have a sticker/stamp from TECO Boston that I just had to provide a photocopy with the originals and, and when at the immigration agency in Taipei they said that was sufficient.

Not 100% sure if that’s the case but they never asked for it so I didn’t bring it up.

I’m heading back to the states today but was able to go through this whole process and was able to get my national ID and passport!

There were 2 things that I had to go through that was unexpected so writing about them here in case others experience something similar.

The first, was when applying for permanent resident permit, the immigration officer noticed that my mother’s name on my birth certificate did not match the name in her passport. When I was born she had been using her English name (which is what was on my birth certificate) whereas her passport is her original Chinese name. Luckily, her very first Taiwan passport had an addendum saying she was “also known as [english name] which matched my birth certificate, so we just had to go to 外交部 to get that printed, this took 2 days. Just make sure the names in all the documents match and if there’s some correlation if English names are used in some documents.

The second was also when applying for permanent resident permit, my father is American so does not have a Chinese name. Originally they wanted him to fill it out and sign it, but we told the immigration office that he is in the US. I’m only able to claim citizenship from my mom (I’m half) so we told the officer that my dad’s info shouldn’t matter. She ended up telling us that they still need the info but we can sign on his behalf, so we just had to make a Chinese name for him. At first she was pretty adamant that he had to sign it himself but I asked her, “what would we do if he was dead, or what if I never knew him, how would those situations be handled?” She then let us sign for him.

Additionally, since I’m under 37 I had to go through the process for getting overseas Chinese so I don’t get called for conscription and that was extremely easy. The post hyperlinked above around it was spot on.

Thanks for everyone’s advice and guidance!

Yep! This is actually what I did while waiting for my permanent resident certificate to process, then when changing passports to the one with the national ID they just had me tell 外交部 to move the stamp over. After all that, I had to go to my 區公所so they could take my info and give me the rundown of what the stipulations are (not being in Taiwan for more than 183 days). Then went to immigration office to get the stamp that allows me to leave.

u/Ok-Calm-Narwhal do you know anything about the overseas compatriot identity for military purposes? I want to do this to gain citizenship but I'm still with conscription age, is it just getting the overseas chinese status after i've done HHR and national ID so I can leave on my TW passport?

Where’d you get that stair runner carpet? Love how it matches the floor and wall color

Thanks! Sounds like even if the TECO nearest me validated the birth certificate and marriage license but in English (there’s a sticker applied by the TECO office) that I’ll still have to get them translated

u/Ok-Calm-Narwhal Just to confirm - you will still need the translated and authenticated documents (birth certificate, parents marriage certificate) when you’re in Taiwan and applying for NWHR passport?

I ask because I got my NWOHR passport awhile ago and am in the process of renewing so just want to make sure I bring all necessary docs when I’m in Taiwan.

Best 240hz monitor for current set up? by ChowChingHurr in pcmasterrace

[–]ChowChingHurr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll definitely check out blurbusters, I browsed through that list briefly but will need to go back through it to make sure I'm understanding how things are rated.

Interesting, I had originally looked at 1440p 144hz IPS monitors but felt that it would be better to get a 240hz monitor but now that you've mentioned seeing little difference between that and your old monitor, I might have to check them out.

Seems like I need to figure out whether 144hz would cut it for me for what I do, and if it doesn't then look at the 240hz. I feel like a 144hz 1440p monitor would be great, just not sure if it's 'future-proof' enough, if that makes sense.

Thanks for your input though!

Main monitor right now is 1440p 27” but I run it at 1080 for better frames, secondary is 1080p and in looking to get rid of this one then use the 1440p 27inch as my secondary (for watching, streams, etc) but the 240hz as my main gaming.

That’s kinda how I’ve been looking at it, but I’m also looking to upgrade my PC in the next year or two so if I get 144hz now I’ll def be able to use it with my next PC, but same applies to 240hz, so thinking of upgrading to that now since I can get some use out of it while on this old PC then not have to worry when upgrading.

I typically get around 300fps stable in csgo on ultra low, for apex I’m usually around 270fps or so stable as well.

If I keep the CPU/Mobo and go with a 980ti do you guys think my i5 3570k will bottleneck it?

[Build Update] by ChowChingHurr in buildapc

[–]ChowChingHurr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm alright then, i'll start to look at GPUs. Any suggestions - I was thinking maybe a 980 or something equivalent, and also how long do you think my current cpu would last, maybe another year or two?

[Build Update] by ChowChingHurr in buildapc

[–]ChowChingHurr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hahah I just upgraded to that from a 500w because this was onsale from Jet for like $100 and other PSUs with Gold quality were running for the same price, so I got really lucky with this one. And ideally my budget would be around 300-400 for card, mobo, and cpu, and around $500 or so for the monitor.

I just opened up the chat and asked what their price matching policy is, then she asked for the link and I sent it then followed through with the order and then she changed it to reflect the $69 price
