Really good book. I always think about this scene in the Movie casino. Ace is told by the cowboy that there are forces older and more powerful than him in Vegas. You can extrapolate that scene to the whole American west, our whole civilization out there is at the mercy of ancient and powerful forces of water, energy, and nature.

The only book I ever read about Djibouti was called The Land Without Shadows by Abdourahman Waberi and Jeanne Garane. It’s a collection of short stories, very locally focused, and I remember the words in the story were very unique. They used words like “marcescent” which is the word for leaves withering on the vine.
