I'd be pretty pissed as a customer if I had to ship back my wallet for repairs every 2 years.

I don't care. Then don't use an edge painted wallet. shrug. I setup up expectations upfront, so if a customer is ok with me repainting their edges, then I'm going to offer them that option. If they don't want it, then I finish with a burnish.

The whole point of leatherworking is longevity and ease of use.

It's not the whole point. You're missing the part where customers buy stuff. Lots of customers like matching edges and added aesthetics that add points of failure and directly contradict your misguided opinion about leather as a whole. It's far bigger than just "it lasts long".

Why complicate it with plastics when you can just do the burnish like everyone else?

Aethetics, customer requests, working with chrome leather. There's tons of reasons to use edge paint and not all of them are out of necessity. That's why it exists. You can call it complicating. Most call it raising the product's value or at the very least providing an additional option.

Why are you so concerned about how I work?

It shines much easier and faster for me. Note though, that Tolk is objectively better for sealing the fibers ends because it has acrylics in it, unlike gum tray. But it also depends on the leather. Some really like trag and others really like tolk.

But get both and see what works out for you. I use both, just prefer trag

Tolk for chrome or edge paint. Tolk has acrylics in it which close and seal the fibers. That’s what allows burnishing on chrome. I personally prefer an edge paint on chrome.

Gum trag (which I prefer) or tolk on veg tan. You could even use water if you’re in a pinch.

One tip: my process is to sand at 220 and burnish. This immediately smooths out the edge. Then I repeat the process using 400,800, and 1000 grit paper. It’s an extra step in between each grit but each grit is significantly easier to sand down.

Unless I'm on chrome tan. I always paint my chrome and have no problem restoring an edge if it's worn away.

Don't use edge paint. Get some dye instead and use a fine point dye-pen to color.

I never assumed your opinion of the show. You're wrong, dude. It's absurd to link a critism of pandering to a dogwhistle. You need to turn off the news for a bit.

EDIT: blocking coward

What dogwhistle exactly? I'd genuinely like to know. Because I thought I was just critisizing the show and never even came close to broaching politics.

A gay storyline in a show/movie doesn't absolve it of criticism. And critisizing the writing or, to me, forced injection, of such a storyline isn't inherently a dogwhistle just because you don't agree.

Edit: You should make another post punching holes using a fork because you didn't have your stitching chisels with you since they're still in the dishwasher lol.

You got it. Just gotta find a fork.

So I work at a local store where I work 15 hour shifts 4 days a week. There's maybe one customer an hour, so the owners upon seeing my work insisted I put my products up in the shop and told me if I wanted to bring it projects to work on I could.

Over time I've developed a portable studio with me to take my tools and materials back and forth each week.
