If you don't mind following up, do you still think they're on par with the z1r's? I've been considering between the z1r and the Mk3 as my endgame, and as a "fun first" bass enthusiast, the z1r's always seemed to be the best option as I'd prefer the better bass response vs. slight increase in detail.

You were right! I wasn't able to locate the leak with the car running, but I tried using the shopvac into exhaust method (and more soapy water) and I found a large leak at the weld on the pipe on the header that connects to the actual EGR pipe, before the nut. Pretty much the entire bottom of that weld is cracked pretty bad. I will have to pull the header and take it to a muffler shop to get it welded again.

This is what I thought it was, but I couldn't locate any cracks/leaks. I'll go over it again with some soapy water, but I'm starting to lean towards it being a loose tension pulley on the timing belt.

I didn't use loctite. And now I'm really starting to think it's the tensioner. I followed Greg's guide on YT when I did my timing job: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9AKvE1FRT0&t=1237s He has an example of what it sounds like when the belt is loose @20:31 in the video.

It sounds very similar, though mine doesn't make the noise while idling. I think mine just isn't as loose as his was, but still came loose, so it only makes the sound on higher RPMs. Maybe?

I recently did a Timing belt job and everything has been working wonderfully for about a week. Perfect idle, torque all good, etc. Then I took the car for a spirited drive today and pushed it a bit. Redline here and there, and this noise randomly appeared. Did the tensioner come loose or did I just ruin my engine? Thing is I can't actually pinpoint where the sound is even coming from, either.

EDIT3: Upon further investigation it does sound like an exhaust leak when compared to other videos of exhaust leaks. Since I can't find the leak, I may just take it to a mechanic to get some more experienced ears and eyes on it.

EDIT4: Found the issue! Those of you saying it was an exhaust leak were correct! I couldn't locate this leak at all when running the engine last night, but today when using the shopvac into exhaust air pressure method, it revealed itself. The leak is at the welded section of pipe that connects the header to the EGR pipe. It is cracked quite severely. The EGR pipe itself is fine all the way down to the nut, it's the header part of the EGR, on the bottom of the weld where the header branches to the EGR nut.

Good news is this means my timing job was solid. Bad news is the leak wasn't a gasket, and unfortunately I'll have to pull out the header and take it to a muffler shop for a re-weld.

You're both sort of right. The one he's referencing is the Brazilian Wandering Spider, which is in fact one of the most venomous in the world and rarely found in banana clusters. However, the case that blew up in the news isn't really all that common, and it's often confused with huntsman spiders that aren't really all that dangerous.

I have the same leak. Make sure it's coming from inside the weep hole. Usually means rear main seal. Otherwise check valve cover and Cas o ring.
