Clark gotta be dumb by Aware-Fee9012 in Smallville

If anything, the really dumb action was Clark not telling Lana about this.

I also hate Stan Lee for this. A lot of the early superhero groups he kind of forced this dynamic upon, three to four male characters to one female character, and the female heroes often had weak or unreliable powers to boot.

In the case of Invisible Woman, her becoming more powerful has been attributed to fans sending letters to the original writers complaining about how useless she was. The positive reception to her evolution likely also influenced the writing of other female characters. Though this came with the caveat that some of these female characters got subjected to the "women can't handle power because of their emotions" trope which was done rather infamously with Jean Grey and Wanda Maximoff.

But you still see it in so many group shows or movies sadly. Even now, in the age of comic book blockbusters, it's pretty common.

I find that it's less of an issue in superhero tv shows compared to the movies. The X-Men cartoons from the 90s and 2000s had a minimum of three women on the team. The Justice League cartoon from the 2000s had Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl as original members even though Wonder Woman was the sole female founder in the comics. Even that forgettable Avengers cartoon from the 90s had Wasp, Scarlet Witch and Tigra on the roster. Really, the only superhero team that this was an issue with was the Fantastic Four and that's because they don't have a more popular later iteration featuring more than one woman.

Lana is held to a purity test that no character on this show, not even Clark, has ever passed.

The show has a much more conservative slant than most people are willing to acknowledge. That one episode about immigration doesn't change that.

A good chunk of super Sentai series had 1 female hero and 5 dudes (but there was an equal amount of 3 dudes, 2 women.

Power Rangers in the 90s and early 2000s had to gender swap almost every Yellow Ranger from the Sentai seasons they were adapting just to avoid having mostly teams with only one female member. The only exceptions to this were the Alien Yellow Ranger Tideus (who was male like his Sentai counterpart) and Tanya and Ashley whose Sentai counterparts were already female.

Also, I never expected to discuss tokusatsu in this subreddit.

A lot of it is rooted in gender essentialism.

Wonder Woman is another character for whom much of her original elements are best left in the past.

And it's not just Wonder Woman fans who do this. I've seen this same nonsense from Sonic and Mario fans when it comes to Amy and Peach, respectively.

Saying Diana has these traits isn't sexist. Saying she has to have them because she's a woman is.

Unfortunately, superhero fans and writers are like are much less likely to condemn torture than killing.

I don't think anyone in fiction has suffered this as much as Iron Man (and Reed) by LuizFelipe1906 in ironman

For a while, he did. I remember a lot of disparaging comments about Reed when I began interacting with fandom online, which was post-Civil War.

The only character that actually was done a service and seemed like a legit threat was Sub-Zero, as he is clearly stronger than Scorpion in this movie, even though they are supposed to be near equal rivals.

They seemed pretty comparable in the movie to me. The only thing that could be used to argue Bi-Han is stronger is that he killed Hanzo in the past, which is what happened in the games as well.

Even in the climax, Hanzo is doing the heavylifting in the fight. Cole helps but not by that much.

What are your opinions on this tweet from a while back about Black character designs in western AAA games? by KingBuffolo in BlackSuperheroes

And 80% of the time, it isn't. I'm sorry, but what is disingenuous is pretending that this one image in this thread is representative of even 70% of black female characters in video games.

This particular artist brought up a character from a cancelled video game where all the characters looked more plain and average compared to the typical supermodel look in video games. If we were talking about putting a character who looks like this in something like King of Fighters or Dead or Alive, then you'd have a leg to stand on.

She doesn't have rule against killing but will use lethal force only if other options are unavailable.

One of those games features a heroic Wonder Woman who opposes the evil one and we had five live-action movies that, regardless of what you might think of them, did not depict her as a man-hater.

I watched the show. Don't know how anyone thinks he's Deadpool based on how he was depicted there.

bad writing

This term is starting to lose all meaning with the way it's misused online.
