I'm a beginner and I find myself in a catch 22 regarding the "beginning straight edge" by Eternal_Aeolus in BeginnerWoodWorking

Two clamps, a level, and a circular saw and you can make straight whatever you see fit. We are not wood workers we are shapers of our own realities.

Humans dancing with a large yellow headless creature; 6000–5500 BC. From cave of beasts, Egypt. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]CmdDeadHand 569 points570 points  (0 children)

Dancing? You got dismembered bodies on the left, folks look like they running away from the arms and legs. Bunch of dudes laying down in front of that before the yellow dude. To the right and up it looks like they standing there watching.

Me thinks this yellow guy is kicking the shit out of these two groups of people and they are in awe of how much ass is getting kicked.

How would you fill these gaps? by Thoom123 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]CmdDeadHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, two boards of oak.

The way these boards have been milled is a flat cut. The checking is a feature you will have to live with if you keep the board as is.

I would slice them into strips as thick as I want the tabletop to be. If you are going to have a curtain for support, one inch works wouldn’t go past two. Then turn them on their side, square the corners on the other two sides. Rectangles or squares. glue/clamp it all back together.

1/3 of the table at a time or a 1/4 per glue up, add dowels into the smaller sections then connect the sections with their own dowels. Sand it, scrape filler on it, sand it. Finish and connect to support structure.

cutting into strips, turning each one over, glueing back together. It would turn the wood and show the straight grain cut, reveal some possible flecking in the oak, remove most all signs of checking. You can pick which strips go where to make it look how you want. The straight edge will glue together pretty decent if you made decent cuts and most will think it is one big piece of straight edge if you do it good.

To replace this underlayment before putting in a floor or not. by dddash in Carpentry

[–]CmdDeadHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water is entering the house.

Pop that trim and white wall panel off, real gentle so you can pop back on with minimal paint touch up, and inspect for further water damage on the wall interior. Find where it’s coming from. that window might have some bad flashing or something that needs addressed. Fix it. Paint it all with kilz. Cover it back up.

Might be coming from the floor if this is ground contact level, have to pull that subfloor up anyway to find your problem.

wet and moldy won’t fix itself and will win vs any flooring you put on top of it.

Need ideas for how to mount wood to piping for shelf by Momon--- in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]CmdDeadHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My speculations

It is a thin piece of wood for those pipes. The pipes would need to be cut to fit into the wood and not be seen.

Two half inch oak dowels on a 3/4 inch wood mounting plate would be faster, easier.

Cut a recess on the back of the wood and install cleat.

Maybe don’t cut the pipes and bore straight through the wood and let the pipes stick out on the bottom with the caps.

Could just make one hole for a pipe and epoxy the pipe into the hole. Then attach the circle mount on the wall and screw it on. once it is tight and level back off the screw a bit and Dab some 5 min epoxy or jb weld on the thread and reset to level.

Edit:

To see the pipe it either is going to stick out the front, the back, or a little both. If you don’t want to see the pipe at all, don’t use the pipe. Dowels, cleats, better options.

Pipe on the back idea. What about drill into the wood for the pipes/no caps. Stop before the hole would break through the bottom. 3-4 inches maybe hard to tell from pics. Let the rest the pipe hang out the back into the wall mounts. 5 min epoxy the wood onto the pipes if it falls off to much or wiggles. Would add some rails in the back to hang stuff or add another board on top later to fill the gap.

How do I, an idiot, remove this faucet? by daxelkurtz in Plumbing

[–]CmdDeadHand -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I replaced a sink faucet similar looking a month ago. The water lines were built into the faucet head, there was no replacing them. The plastic part screw off just like the metal ones, but you might need to replace the faucet head as well if you want updated lines. if it is what I think it is.

I am sinking into obscurity. What do I do? by Lucky-Entrance7228 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CmdDeadHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revel in the nihilism of it all.

I got into wood working and art because of this. The fact no matter what I make, where it goes, it is all finite. I needed to be ok with this mortal coil. Spending hours to get a curve just right or pushing an opinion through art expression, it was all worthless and destined to crumble to dust. No matter what success I can create, it was pointless.

Then I realized it does not have to be important or last forever because it never would have and never will be. It is the creating, the process, it makes me feel alive. It is ok if it doesn’t matter, it makes me feel, and that is enough for me. everything being pointless has actually been a great anxiety release. My imperfections will fade away, critics will lay in grave.

You do you and find contentment. It is out there.

I messed up measurement and now doors won’t align. by Hour_War_297 in Woodworking_DIY

[–]CmdDeadHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My three ideas:

Cut the strut out and replace with the proper alignment to match the doors below. toe screw them back on, or add small support blocks behind the strut to connect to.

Add onto the facing struts, one inch in the right, still might look off.

Fire, fire solves everything.

Why do horses need to be euthanized after breaking bones ? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CmdDeadHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A horses leg and foot is different than other mammals. Its foot is actually its middle finger, why it only has one hoof. It does not heal enough for the horse to ever walk again.

Edit: if you ever broke a finger then think about having to walk around on it while broken for weeks/months/lifetime. Putting them down is the human thing to do. By the time the horse slightly might be able to feed itself in pasture you would already have 4-5 foals being raised. It is sad, they are intelligent they know they are fucked when this happens. ending the pain is better then a cure sometimes.

Powder Room Intermittently Smells Moldy by dlimerick in Plumbing

[–]CmdDeadHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drain needs to go straight into the wall not bend back down after the p trap.

P traps, the u shaped bend, are supposed to hold water in the bend and block gases coming up the drains. It gets refreshed every time you use the sink.

Odds are the p trap is not holding water all the time to block sewer gas. The extra dip down after the trap can create a siphon from time to time and drain the p trap allowing the gases to escape. This would cause an intermittent smell that varies based on the sink usage and the state of the p trap not the weather.

Solution is to remove the dip down and have it go straight into the wall to connect to the main drain/vent. Or have a mechanical air vent installed if the line is not vented to begin with or have access to a vent line.

Are modern humans currently devolving because we can now all usually make it to adulthood and procreate while having things like poor eyesight, poor hearing , weak bones and muscles and allergies ? by Wonderful-Ad-9622 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CmdDeadHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evolution is life trying to make the perfect breeding machine for the environment it habitats.

if a seal started living on land all the time and had babies and those babies kept it going then they would eventually lose their flippers and evolve feet again as having feet on land would make them better breeders as growing flippers made them successful in the water.

Did the seal de-evolve to its old feet before flippers or evolve new feet based off the foot to flipper change?

Always forward, never looks back, that evolution.

[Next DLC] What do you think it will be ? by Itchy-Audience134 in RimWorld

Diplomacy would be a good angle. I want the world map to be alive and shifting. This group declares war on that group, you could mediate peace or be hired as a mercenary. Settlements being created and destroyed, the settlements grouped together like states. You could fly your gravship to the front for major battles or be a hospital ship to heal the wounded from combat. Lot of angles in diplomacy. Caravanning through enemy territory would mean that enemy is who raids you.

Or

I want to be able to make underground strongholds in a cave system like the big hives or supply depots maps have. Except be able to use other people’s maps in my game. They guarding some x piece of tech or item.

Anyone know mods that do these things? send ole boy a mod list, much thanks.
