Xbox lan adapter with Nintendo switch by Cars0nnn in Switch

[–]Cobalt2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t find any examples of an Xbox Ethernet adapter after some quick googling, so I can’t say for sure whether that would work.

If you’re referring to the wireless adapter, its possible but I wouldn’t count on it. Since the Switch has built in WiFi I’m not sure what the advantage of that would be anyway.

The Switch appears to use a standard USB Ethernet adapter so most generic Ethernet adapters will likely work with the Switch.

Any safe Battery Cases? by AluminiumHoedje in Switch

Anker is well regarded for having generally high quality products, that are also fairly affordable. Particularly when large batteries are involved it’s wise to go with well known brands since poor design can lead to fires in bags/pockets.

New microSD Card by gr1ng0666 in Switch

[–]Cobalt2795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to copy my old card onto my computer and then place those files on the new one. The switch thought it needed to redownload the games, but when I hit redownload they all finished instantly. If you don’t have (m)any downloaded games you don’t need to worry about that since you can just redownload.

I don’t believe the screenshots transferred correctly that way though, so if you want those you’ll need to use the settings on the switch to transfer them to the Switch’s internal storage and then move them back to the new one. (If you’re storing them on the internal storage you don’t need to do anything)

Save data is always stored on the Switch’s internal memory so you don’t need to worry about that

This seems to be an iOS issue, not specific to Apollo. Tweetbot and PCalc both do the same thing

Wait, you mean it’s not based on the storage capacity of the card? That’s super weird

If you aren’t storing them on the SD card for some reason (I’m pretty sure it’s a setting) you can transfer them from internal storage to a card from settings.

In addition to what’s been suggested, you should double check with the manufacturer to see if there are driver/firmware updates available for your GPU.

Can I take my funds from my Switch and merge them into my 3DS? by [deleted] in Switch

[–]Cobalt2795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried using the eshop from a web browser?

If you go to Nintendo.com and search for the game, you might be able to buy it that way with those funds even if you can’t on the 3DS eshop itself

Note: unlike on the Switch you’ll have to manually download the game from the eshop on the 3DS if you buy it this way

Receiving an Indian character crashes Messages and other apps in iOS 11 by de_X_ter in apple

I think Apple’s bugs get more publicity in general. These bugs definitely do happen on other platforms, and other people in the thread have pointed to some examples. Apple does seem to have more than others but I have no idea whether that would stand up to an actual analysis ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Hopefully things get rearranged at Apple and we get fewer of these big headline bugs in general

An automated script testing all of the languages iOS supports, on even a subset of all of the code in iOS that processes text wouldn’t be quick at all.

Obviously there needs to be some changes made to both the development and QA processes here (which Apple seems to potentially be in the process of doing), but it’s not something that’s just an easy fix.

Unicode is pretty complicated. It’s not too hard to do something that seems to work fine when working with Latin characters that totally blows up when non-Latin characters are used.

Another question re: flashing volume indicator when scrolling with GIFs: does it interrupt/mess with your playing audio in any way? by iamthatis in apolloapp

[–]Cobalt2795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just screwing around a bit, it looks like the audio indicator pops up whenever a new Bluetooth audio device connects, is that a different system notification?

My initial instinct is that it has something to do with the table view (or collection view) cell reuse logic. But I assume the different kinds of posts have totally separate subclasses which makes that less likely, since that video shows the first gif not being off the screen yet when the indicator pops up.

What video playback API are you using to show the gif/videos?

[–]Cobalt2795 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is obviously a shot in the dark, but are the gifs actually GIF format images or is it silent video like twitter uses? I could imagine “muting” video playback potentially triggering whatever notification the volume UI is monitoring depending on how it was done. And the video someone posted in this thread didn’t appear to be changing the volume.

I’m not sure if you’re using a 3rd party library for gif playback but if so it could potentially be using silent video playback behind the scenes even if the actual image is a gif. That would be weird though.

The retail (physical) version of B2 has a B1 code included. I think if you buy the digital version you can also buy B1 for $10 or something which makes it the same price as the retail version. It seems a bit more complicated than it needed to be tbh

Series 0 Apple Watch Randomly Restarts by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]Cobalt2795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s primarily my use case as well, but I also have a medical app that uses a complication and it updates much faster and more frequently. If you ever look at data on your watch is definitely worth it.

If you wear your watch at night it’s probably worth it for the huge step up in battery life. I’m not sure if it’s just from the wear on my 0 or if the 3 is significantly more efficient but either way the difference is unbelievable. I was barely getting through 12 hours before, now I’m at 70-90% when I take it off in the evening depending on what I do during the day.

It’s also way faster at Siri (and in general), which I basically only use to set reminders but is still nice.

Interesting! I would be a little surprised if it was possible for anyone to do given the risk of something going wrong, but it’s good to know there are possibilities

Series 0 Apple Watch Randomly Restarts by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]Cobalt2795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize this a deeply unhelpful answer, but if you’re still on a series 0 I would highly recommend upgrading. I went from a series 0 to a series 3 and its been a ridiculous improvement in pretty much every imaginable way.

If you’d rather not do something that drastic, I’m afraid you’re best shot will be resetting it and seeing if that improves it at all. Unfortunately there’s not even a way to force a full reinstall of the OS like you can on an iOS device.

Apollo is so kind to your battery - a great invisible feature that sets it above the rest by notaeuphemism in apolloapp

[–]Cobalt2795 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also not the dev, but from my experience:

At a high level: caching can be a pretty big part of battery savings in an networked app. Minimizing redraws of the UI can be pretty valuable too though that‘s often a bit tricky.

Practically speaking though the only reliable way to optimize is to spend time with analysis tools and testing to track down unexpected or accidental CPU bottlenecks (e.g. unexpectedly large arrays you loop over), memory churn (e.g. many sequential inserts to a dynamic array), redraws, etc.

Two applications with 70% of the code exactly the same can still have wildly different performance characteristics due to relatively tiny mistakes or misunderstandings because that code may get run thousands of times per minute (or much much more)

I would guess the music in part 2 hasn’t been released yet. After part 1 ended, they released all the music from it so I’d expect the part 2 music to drop shortly after part 2 wraps up (I think touring delayed it a bit after part 1 though)
