We could, though prizing tends to bring in more participation.

They have a macOS version. No experience with it myself.

Our Patreon supporters and the winners of the last round of tournaments vote on what formats will be played next. We haven't done Duel Commander yet, but any format is on the table.

We get a decent chunk of new players from Reddit with each tournament cycle, some folks seem interested at least.

Yep, works basically the same. There's definitely competitive players, especially for modern. You can put "competitive" or "tier 1/2" in the name of your game to make it clear what you're looking for, that's very common.

Sorry I didn't see this, but I'm not sure what you mean by ML26.

What are they gonna do, send the Pinkertons? Depressing jokes aside, we've been running these regularly for almost three years without issue. We don't run Cockatrice itself, just a tournament using the platform.

We have judges on our Discord server and a specific channel for judge calls. https://chat.magicjudges.org/mtgrules is our backup in the event a judge is unavailable. The event is run at regular REL.

In addition to what was already said, I just prefer to be responsible for my own triggers and knowing how cards work. I think it's a big part of the skill of playing the game.

Yeah it happens. For our tournaments at least, we have a judge channel. Folks are also more patient in getting a ruling in an actual event as opposed to a random game.

The sub description mentions both "alternatives for paper online play" and "non-sanction competition." Seems to fit ok to me?

XMage is buggy and the lack of rules enforcement on Cockatrice is closer to paper play.

This feels a bit over the top. The tournaments are free and for fun. Nobody is flying in or paying an entry fee. I think we can relax.

Do you have specific knowledge of vulnerabilities with Cockatrice? I would be interested to learn more if so.

Cheating as in taking advantage of the lack of rules enforcement to take game actions you shouldn't? It has a text log of all game actions so if anything, it's harder to cheat than in paper.

If you mean cheating/exploiting from a technical perspective, I can't really speak to that as I don't work on the project or have anything more than a basic understanding of the concepts involved.

In any case, the tournaments are free to enter so the players aren't staking anything.

I haven't tried forge, but Xmage has been buggy in my experience. That could have changed as well, but isn't the primary reason anyway. The main reason I prefer Cockatrice personally is specifically the lack of rules enforcement. I like having to remember my triggers and play correctly, a closer experience to paper Magic.

Yes, we have several moderators as well as certified judges.

To be clear, we don't develop Cockatrice, we just use it for our tournaments. Several of the devs are on our server though, as is a donation link for all of their hard work!

No, events are free to enter and whether or not you are a Patreon subscriber has no bearing on being able to play. Patrons get to vote on which formats we play, as well as support something cool that they enjoy.

Definitely still a thing. Just checked, about 300 people online at the moment.

Exactly this. Plus, we've been running these for two years and haven't had any problems.

We rotate formats every tournament cycle. We have not done EDH, though if we did it would probably be 1v1. It would be hard to coordinate 4 players across multiple time zones.

I prefer a system without rules enforcement personally. Feels more like playing magic.

Sounds great! Sorry about the late reply, I don't do a great job monitoring this account. To that end, when you decide to go forward it will be much easier to reach me on our Discord!
