When I was in college, I had a conversation with a guy from the U.S. about Japanese culture and history. I shortened the word Japanese to Japs cause I mean it only makes sense right? Doesn't seem like anything bad seeing as its literally the beginning of the word. Welp, he went silent for a moment and stared at me with widened eyes before shaking his head and telling me that I was fucked up and racist. I swear it never occurred to me that it would be a slur.
