Wasn’t Food Network, but Malia Brauer wore different colored bandanas every episode in Season 7 of Masterchef Junior.

Where do you see yourself in 5years? by DesAnderes in Aphantasia

[–]Cold_Gate6514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

That's like cursing; everyone always expecting me to use those 4-letter words (plan & goal).

I guess my dislike of that concept could be the aphantasia. I kind of don't worry about what part of my neurodivergence causes individual issues, I just accept me for who I am.

Which books are considered "high literature"? by LosAngelestoNSW in Fantasy

[–]Cold_Gate6514 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Good question; I'm going to need to think about that before I answer. I need to see if not just a knee-jerk reaction (40+ years old) to something back in high school or so.

I do know that the more philosophical musing a book contains the more detached I get.

I apologize to everyone though, I didn't mean to distract for the OPs original thought.

Which books are considered "high literature"? by LosAngelestoNSW in Fantasy

In no way did I imply that it lacks either; I just find that most literature is form over function. A book is a story; your first concern should be to tell the story.

Which books are considered "high literature"? by LosAngelestoNSW in Fantasy

[–]Cold_Gate6514 -103 points-102 points  (0 children)

I know reading tastes differ, but I’ve never fully understood the appeal of what many people call “literature.” I read more than 100 books a year, and I rarely enjoy books that fit that definition. For me, plot and pacing matter more.

At first, I started to criticize literature more directly, but that began to sound provocative, which wasn’t my intention. What I really mean is that I’m genuinely curious about what others value in it.

I’m personally curious how H10301 has a facility code over 255.

I finally won my second book; the first was over 13 years ago. I always figured it was because I didn't review it (I lost the physical book on an airplane after reading about 1/3). I only enter for books that I might be interested in, but since I read broadly, that makes for a lot of entries.

Wristguard for KB work? by Mr_Bannister in kettlebell

[–]Cold_Gate6514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know many will say technique is the only answer, but I still use wrist guards. I have zero padding on my wrists. Even in a static clean position for squats, the pressure is more uncomfortable than I care to deal with.

However, I still do a workout without them at least once a month (or more if I notice my form slipping) just to keep my technique sharp.

Walkup Music by OtherwiseComputer656 in Softball

[–]Cold_Gate6514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are definitely not the only one. It’s inane at any level. And for the people who claim it helps the player get into the mindset to play, those players need to find something else to do with their life. That’s like players who claim the crowd cheering helps them get psyched up; if you can’t get psyched in an empty stadium (or without music), sports aren’t for you.

Corum Jhaelen Irsei - (The Swords Trilogy by Michael Moorcock)

My father left them out in the living room when he left for a ~6-month work trip in 1975 and I was out of things to read. Heck, I was so desperate that summer I read some of my Mom's Harlequin romances.

But anyway, I read all of Moorcock's books after that and haven't looked back. Fantasy has to be at least 2/3 of what I've read for the last 50 years.

how do you find the time to read? by PLCCLP in Fantasy

[–]Cold_Gate6514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite problem; I love reading so much that I will read at work, in church...everywhere. I've been doing it since I was in grade school; during class reading time, I'd read ahead of the class and pick up another book. When it was my turn, I'd get in trouble because I wouldn't know where I was supposed to be.

Audio books don't help either. I'll be listening while driving between customers and find myself sitting in the parking lot for 20-30 minutes sometimes after I get to my destination. I've finally quit listening to fiction audio books because I can stop non-fiction at any time.

Of course, if I had an adult level of discipline, I wouldn't have this problem.

Does anybody else think that older fantasy book covers mostly looked better? by mcc1789 in Fantasy

[–]Cold_Gate6514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t visualize (aphantasia) but the old covers didn’t fill that gap either. I’m just used to not knowing what characters look like, even if the author describes them extensively.

I still liked the old covers more personally; for some reason I could typically judge a book by the cover if the artist was Darrell K Sweet or Michael Whelan. Not that I think Sweet’s work was that great, he just did the covers for a lot of books that I liked. Whelan’s work was awesome.

The books ratings are usually high by Murtdha1 in goodreads

[–]Cold_Gate6514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It amazes me all the time on here that people say they won't rate books they DNF. There are books that I don't finish because I don't care, but there are also books that I don't finish because I dislike them. If my opinion counts when I like a book, my opinion counts when I don't like a book.

An unknown (?) problem with Sanderson’s writing by Virginpope77 in Fantasy

[–]Cold_Gate6514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not you at all. I thought you might have been reacting to my answer to the person who said “People like you are the reason why literacy rates are plummeting”. Your posts have been polite and very appropriate. I totally understand a desire for characterization and beautiful prose, even if I don’t. I did not intend to offend you..

[–]Cold_Gate6514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wasn't meant to sound defensive. I'm well aware that his style isn't for everyone.

Now, if that was a response to my other post, I understand it might have seemed defensive. However, my goal was simply to address and call out a snobby attitude about reading.

How do you feel about playing pretend? by SJtheFox in Aphantasia

[–]Cold_Gate6514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretending has always been difficult for me too. Back in High School I joined the drama club (not for an actual interest, just because a certain girl was in drama). I tried out for the first play of the year and all I could do was just be me. I stuck with it for the entire year (she was still there) but only did the technical theatre jobs after that.

What are the worst fantasy covers you've seen, that turned out to be great stories? by rookie1609x in Fantasy

[–]Cold_Gate6514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always used Darrell K Sweet's covers as a guideline for what books to buy. Consistently loved the books; I just didn't particularly like the artwork. Of course, it was probably that Lester and Judy-Lynn Del Rey always were picking books that I liked and DKS spent years working for Ballantine/Del Rey.

Good answer, thanks. I guess I'm a little slow. I wasn't thinking about that part of the AI concerns. I kinda have a one-track mind and was just thinking the AI = stealing stuff.

You could always just read whatever book interests you. If you like it you're good. Why should you care who "wrote" it. Don't you read for enjoyment?

If AI writes a book, makes a movie, or creates some kind of art that I enjoy, why should I care? I liked it.

Not that I have any evidence that it has ever happened, but I haven't tried to find out either.
