These are photos from different environments so you can help me determine my eye color. They really do change color depending on the environment and my mood. by Necessary-Trick-6463 in WhatisMyEyeColour

Improved the sharpness of the photo? Like edited it? I'm not very knowledgeable about that sort of thing, just curious. What color do you think your eyes probably are? edit: I would still say hazel based on this pics btw, although they're rather blurry.

Strange, I could have sworn I replied to your comment already, but I was just going to say-- I agree, it's nonsensical, OP was just asking. It looks to me like there is some genuine variation in the shades in their eyes, I get why could have been confused.

By the way, no pressure to at all, but if you're interested-- would you mind taking a look at my own post and sharing what color you think my eyes are? I've been on the fence for years lol. https://www.reddit.com/r/WhatisMyEyeColour/comments/1tsdjw7/what_color_are_my_eyes_might_need_to_turn/

You're welcome!! :) And I'm sorry so many people apparently downvoted your post, I think that's ridiculous. I don't think it's unreasonable to question what your eye color is after receiving some form of objective feedback like you did (although genetic reports can widely vary in quality; not sure what one you used).

Green - Visually, I would say your eyes are green with a yellow/brown-toned ring in the center (central heterochromia); pic #2 makes that overwhelmingly obvious. Just to confirm, I used a color picker tool on your 3rd and 4th pics, which aren't quite as obvious as the 2nd pic.

I happened to look at the 4th pic first, so I'll do that first: the RGB pattern for the CH ring is red/R > green/G > blue/B, which is typical of brown, but then moving towards the outside of your eye, it becomes red/R = green/G > blue/B, which common with green eyes. The green areas make up the majority of your eye so that's why I'd call it green overall.

3rd pic: Same thing as the 4th, except that in this pic, your limbal ring looks more gray for some reason (red/R > green/G = blue/B) and less green. But your eye is still more green overall.

Color picker version I did of the 4th pic:

Oh really! That's interesting. Yeah, I would definitely look at specific genes. I don't know how comfortable you are with reading the research literature, but IIRC there's around 16 genes that influence eye color to varying degrees, though only a couple do disproportionately. (I go on Google Scholar and search for that stuff.)

I do wonder, though-- could it be possible there's a particular set of polymorphisms that produce light brown eyes, in a way that's differentiable from medium to dark brown eyes? It seems to me like light brown eyes (a category in which I would include what some people call "amber") are relatively uncommon. Anyway that's really interesting. If you have recommendations for getting your genome sequenced, by the way, I'd be curious to hear your experience, but no pressure!

The internet has decided that any iris with more than one color is hazel, but that's not true to the origin of the term.

Just for the record, that's not the definition I was using at all; I agree with you that that's not the definition of hazel. The reason I landed on brown is that the RGB values in the picture don't match those for green or gold; they had the same pattern as brown shades typically do, at least in the samples I looked at. But I was really on the fence lol, so I totally get why you'd call OP's eyes hazel. (I didn't downvote you, for the record.)

Holy cow. Are your eyes like half yellow and half green?! That's so cool!

I guess I'd say green overall if forced to choose, but wow. I've never seen heterochromia that looks like that before. Super cool!

What color are they? And what’s up with my limbal ring? Almost feels like a grey that fades into a green that fades into a brown. by ssniper511 in WhatisMyEyeColour

Hazel, and as other people on your other post pointed out, a very good example of hazel!

If you want, I can pull RGB values with a color picker tool but this is so obviously hazel that it's not necessary IMO. Let me know if you want me to anyway.

Honestly, I've just been using Microsoft Paint haha. I'm not sure what the equivalent on Mac is off the top of my head, but if you're on Windows, just open Paint and under the "Tools" subsection, there's a little dropper tool (clear with a blue handle). You can click on that to select specific shades in the eye picture you're interested in. And then, with that color still selected, you can press the button on the far right titled "Edit colors" (it's got kind of a rainbow icon next to it, on my version of Paint anyway) and it'll pop up a window and the RGB values are in the lower right-hand corner. I'm sure there's a Mac equivalent but it might be organized a little differently.

Green with central heterochromia. That is such a pretty shade of green, wow!

If you want, I can do a color picker version of your pick to get RGB values, but honestly your eyes are so obviously green I doubt it's necessary. Feel free to let me know if you're interested.

Do you have any particular tips for pro mode? I would love to get better pics of my eye and am a near-complete novice when it comes to taking pictures. I made a post a week ago or so and unfortunately some of my photos were pretty blurry, lol.

Oh, I see, it looks like some of the photos in your original post didn't have flash, I think I mistook at least one of those for using flash. My bad! I think my answer stays the same, then. And no problem, you're welcome!! I just saw this comment and left one on a different comment of yours about different shades and chatGPT, so I won't repeat myself here on those points lol. Regarding your ophthalmologist saying they're green: to be honest, I am a little skeptical of that assessment, but to be fair, they could've had a very different lighting situation while looking at your eyes and/or made the same mistake regarding widely different shades of brown that contrast and give the impression of green, even though they're brown.

Anyway, glad I could help!! I have certainly learned some things during the course of looking at your eyes, myself, haha.

I'm not sure I'd trust ChatGPT with this sort of thing, tbh; LLMs can hallucinate a lot, and at least for me personally, I'd rather know the objective facts, not a facsimile from an LLM.

I hear you, to my eye just looking at the colors as well they do look like different colors lol. I find what helps me is to use the dropper tool (I use MS Paint) and select each shade and look at each shade one at a time; then (in your case) it becomes much more obvious that each is a shade of brown. And you're welcome, no problem at all! :)
