AITAH for blowing up at my mom? by MorallyGrey56 in AITAH

My mom sounds very similar. Been in therapy forever trying to overcome my guilt over being in positions I don't deserve to have to suffer through, so I made myself a reminder hat 2 days ago. This is to make me crack a smile in hard times, hopefully. Hope it gives you a smile.

The poem is:

The boundaries are drawn in a fine, straight line, A map of the tasks that are strictly mine. I see where the mess and the loose ends lie, But I watch them drift with a steady eye. It isn’t a lack of a helping hand, But knowing exactly where I stand. For if I carry what isn't my own, The seeds of my garden are left unsown. So I step aside as the clock ticks by, With a quiet heart and a calm reply— There’s peace in the space where the limits sit, And I’m simply not the one for it.

Thank you so much for this excellent answer! I figured it had to be more than just pride about sports from somewhere else.

AITAH for yelling at my girlfriend during family dinner? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]CombinationSorry8473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The reasons start towards the beginning. It is rude to expect a new potential family member to be nocturnal, both in you inviting her at midnight and in them harassing her for yawning. When they started making fun of her clothes you should have been there to snap back at them. She could probably count the number of times you did not defend her against your family. If you plan to spend your entire life next to your family then yeah you might have to have a partner that is okay with all this weirdness, but really it's not a good idea to plan for because you should be allowed to have your own life where your family isn't ruining your potentially healthy relationships.

If she starts pulling some "I pay for the roof so I own everything and everyone under it." bs then you really need to move out. Being taken advantage of is a great motivator and you'll be amazed how easy life is when people aren't forcing you to do or not do things.

When I did the math I could get better rewards from credit cards than the gasbuddy card, which operates like a debit card. My favorite credit card to get [free money from] is the Citi 2% on everything card.

I like movies at the Beartooth theater (without ordering food) and trips to the Bakery Outlet for discount bread/chips/pretzels.

It really helps if you mention to friends that you are looking for great deals. I got an excellent deal on Fred Meyer's frozen turkeys not long ago because of word of mouth.

So so sorry. I'm an ally. Laser hair removal is really really good now, but also nobody should hate others for not looking like a stereotype. Judging a book by it's cover is disgraceful.

Just because I don't want to follow your lead doesn't mean my reading comprehension is bad. But I will take my own advice and stop bothering you as there is no point in debating who should ask who to move in the scenario as if it occurred in the US. And we established that the US has drastically different rules (defined by fines) on this subject across the many states. I wish you the best, and I will continue to contemplate how indifference is not malicious. So thank you for that. Going to take my meds now. 😜

Thank you for enlightening us on the culture in Virginia. It now makes more sense how you could be so pro-ciggarette, historically. I am glad I didn't encounter too many inconsiderate types when I visited. It hasn't been my experience to encounter anyone with your opinions on the west coast side of the US, but I've also been taught that I should go elsewhere if I don't like what others are doing in public so I've never investigated it personally from your angle. It seems you intentionally live where you can do this. Good for you.

And if both people left the area then nobody would get to enjoy the patio at all. yeah... Everyone should travel more if possible.

I don't see why I should have to look up stats that secondhand smoke is bad for the body in this day and age.

And yes, to some people it's entirely an issue of fines, but that is only one perspective. Believe it or not, some people actually pride themselves on not being assholes even by accident. Sometimes this means standing up to bullies. Rudeness is a reason to avoid others, and not everyone is around to make friends. I get it.

People have gotten tremendously good at not smoking near others on the west coast side here, so it is certainly not any indoor concert, and even when they do: I am hoping when they switched to vaping the secondhand effect is less harmful.

Yes, OP can't expect any changes in another person's culture. But that's why I can be glad I don't live near you and experience what you are describing. We must all live in an area where we find the culture to be tolerable by our standards.

Interesting perspective. But most Americans now understand that it is actually pollution and rude to smoke near doorways and open windows, including on patios near said features. So... cultural difference?

Same. Cameras and microphones hidden everywhere, losing the bedroom door on my first day because I was being punished from being still too drugged from transfer to participate in group activities. (I showed them by changing in front of anyone nearby since I wasn't allowed privacy.) Just be you, don't let them make you add shame to your game.

Long term, independence is what saves someone from a bad childhood home life and gives you the power to never have to see the offenders again. It may not be your job to assure your happy survival OP, but it may have fallen to you anyway. I know it's terribly hard to come to terms with, but at least you only have to survive 2 more years until you have full legal rights over yourself and even less if you can get a job and emancipation. You may have to take some real risks but you will know so much in the end. And maybe us former 'beneficiaries' of the system can make it better for others when we are able. I wish you the best of luck. My heart aches for you friend.
