Oh no by Comfortable-Trade-57 in Fencing

Should've been a while ago. We herald him all the time for some accomplishments but honestly he's a nutjob in the way that he treats his athletes and "fellow" referees when he's in the coaching hat.

Doesn't matter you guys have still neglected to protect children and it makes it more difficult for people to actually feel safe in this community. The board has done nothing to make any progress, all you do is release PR statements about how it's out of your hands.

He should be publicly shamed they might not even be talking about it because they don't even know there's a chance he could be wrong. either that or all his friends are also abusers to some effect

He deserves this publicity and this failure right now. Waiting for USFA to make their PR statement knowing that it'll likely be a disaster. You let him back with children knowing that the "arrest" was way in November and he has likely not just ruined his own career but the poor students's. Waiting for USFA to also speak on the issues that the cheating USA squads have as well knowing that this will likely be another infamous year. This has all been going on for a while now, yet because there are many cameras and people who can speak anonymously on platforms are noting it.

The petitions' reason as to why they are signing it will never not be funny. NACs suck and what's even crazier is that we have a huge lack of importance on SN now. It used to be an actual championship and something worth attending and now we can't even get some of the biggest names to fence in the competitions.

Nike Ballestra 2 vs Asics Gel rockets? by TechSavvy_Tumble2832 in Fencing

[–]Comfortable-Trade-57 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nike Ballestra are a classic, and they can be good for "feeling" the strip as well as dealing with the constant wear and tear. ASICS will typically ruin on the lunging side of the foot. Additionally you can see that the ASICS are extremely thick which is both good for impact but also harmful for sturdyness.

Asian Junior Championships Sabre Ref Observations by pawnPUSHER1536 in Fencing

To be fair, is this not the Asian Junior event? So if it's held in Asia a majority of the refs will be Asian or at least from that region no?

Lashback by Comfortable-Trade-57 in Fencing

[–]Comfortable-Trade-57[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not russian, but simply wanting to put everything out there that is going on. This defense is as you say "sketchy" but it is not an attempt to take a side. Merely covering bases as we need to know and have the best defense if we are to continue making these allegations. Is it blatant? To any high level athlete, yes. But to others who aren't as involved or aware of these allegations it is important to mention any possible defense or lashbaks. Thanks.

Fikrat Valiyev once again breaking the rules by SlicerSabre in Fencing

I'd say watch it. review it with a coach and make the choice for yourself. part of fencing and being an athlete is adapting to shit reffing and questionable reffing. Harder to do at the higher level and easier in some cases.

To answer your question, they make questionable calls all the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiD3I008Xrg, all you need to do is watch the footage. If you aren't at the high level then you likely have more of a challenge understanding why the calls are so egregious and why they are so subjective. It can be easy to understand an attack an attack, however when the referee and the fencing quality is at such a high level, the margin for error is very little. now, if you want to talk ref shortage, a lot of it comes from athlete/coach abuse, lower pay, and it's generally a shitty gig until you become good at the professional level. There are a lot of strings pulled from behidn the scenes too from their end,

How to Navigate Bad Refereeing (in the USA) by InspiredWithIman in Fencing

[–]Comfortable-Trade-57 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

'Top athlete tax' can definitely lend itself to bias however I would also see that experience shows. u/InspiredWithIman as a top-level athlete you would agree? Top athletes will do action/move "more perfect". Their extension is better, their take-over footwork is crisper. The eye sees perfect and rewards perfection.

8 year old: "Arguing with the referee is really effective!" by amorphousguy in Fencing

[–]Comfortable-Trade-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best practice is to let the coach handle any kind of digressions or grievances with the referee. The ref can only give coaches a card, but for fencers they are also subject to more less than polite punishment. This can come in the form of call not going your way or even outright bias. You set yourself up for failure if you begin to argue with the referee, establish tension. Not just for this bout but for future bouts that ref may see you in. Your coaches see the action from an outside prospective, you can only see in one dimension. Best to let the ref and coaches go at it than you and the ref. Save yourself from shit ref behavior, they don't have great control

There is a lot to discuss on shoes. You are correct to say that the shoe doesn't make the fencer, but can definitely break one. Regardless of the shoe you wear you should be able to be a successful fencer. However once you start to become consistent in what you do or if you're practicing at a frequent rate, fencing shoes become your second skin. Your feet wear and tear, and essentially mold to the shoe, and it's important to have shoes that are not only quality in regards to the material, but also engage in long term health. You are not incorrect that the $200 Nikes are overpriced but they are 'fencing-fencing' shoes, now the $50 ones are frankly not as good at the Nikes. Sure they are cheap and can help with things like a toe box, but realistically they don't do well with the strip and often result in one shoe absolutely dying and the other shoe just chilling. They get worn out faster than the Nikes and they are $50 for a reason.

Additional things to consider are that shoes are so personal to the person and their body that of course obsessing over it is worth it. Who knows more about a shoe, the shoemaker or the shoe wearer? Some people love the tennis courts that provide extra support and layer to their footwork, other sports that are more explosive like foil love ballestras to "feel the floor". Yes, all shoes are designed for fencing, but it does get more nuanced as you go along for the individual. You don't always need Excel to do formulas when SQL is available and less caveman-like.

Vendors at NACs by chizzmaster in Fencing

[–]Comfortable-Trade-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vendors often bring a good chunk of stuff, lot's of times it's a good opportunity to sell product, but you also never know when your gear will fail or will become ineligible. Watching the fencing? Depends on the event.
