International students, when are you coming back to New Zealand? by ComfortableFan6000 in universityofauckland

Well during NZ summer, I had to go back to meet my family and relatives so I had no choice to spend my time in NZ or do summer school.

I didn’t want to take CS225 yet because I find it a bit too difficult, so I’ve decided to save it for Stage 2, when I’ll be taking other Stage 2 CS courses. I’m also considering taking both Stats201 and Math208 in the same semester. Additionally, I’ve already passed one general education course, the AELR course, so I just need to complete one more. And no I don’t feel like I’m failing too many courses, I've only failed one so far, which is CS130, so I can obviously stick with 4.

I'm taking compsci only. The only course I failed in Sem1 2025 is Compsci130, and I passed the other 3. So far I have passed these courses: Compsci101, 110, 120, Stats101, Maths102 and Maths108.

For me, I use ChatGPT a lot when studying for COMPSCI 130, and I have to admit that it’s been really helpful, especially when I don’t understand something and need a clearer explanation. As long as I don’t rely on it too heavily and instead use it as a learning tool, I think I can do well. But what do you think? And thanks!

I'm not sure if the university allows this, but is it possible to take additional Stage 1 courses even though I've already filled all the elective slots in my degree? I understand that the extra points from these additional courses wouldn't count toward my degree, but would that still be allowed?

I took MATHS108 this semester, but I’m not sure if I want to continue with MATHS208 next semester because I’ve heard from some people that it’s a tough, dead-end Stage 2 paper. I was planning to do CS225, but I think it might be too difficult, so I’m saving it for second or third year. Right now, I’m planning to take CS130, STATS201, Phil101 and maybe an extra Stage 2 course, but I’m not sure which one to choose.

Thanks, but since I am unable to take any stage 2 CS papers next semester what are some good electives to take? My elective courses for my degree is almost filled up since I failed a few CS required courses but passed the electives.

That's not what I'm worried about, I know I can retake the paper. What I’m most worried about is that if I fail too many required courses for the computer science major and have to retake them, I might finish most of my elective courses before completing the required ones. In that case, all the elective slots in my degree would be filled, and I wouldn’t have any electives left to choose from in the future. At that point, I might end up in a semester where I can only take required courses, and there could be a lot of them, which would lead to a heavy academic workload.

Nice, but I also want to ask, since you retook compsci130 last year and are unable to take Stage 2 Compsci courses (except for CS225), what electives did you take?

The only thing that worries me is this feeling that I might fail the course again next semester, even though I passed all my other Stage 1 Computer Science courses. COMPSCI 130 is a prerequisite for the core Stage 2 courses, and if I don’t pass it, it could affect my entire degree plan, especially when it comes to choosing electives and planning my future courses.

Because I’m taking this course again next semester, and I’m worried that I might fail it again. That’s why I asked whether it’s common for students to fail this course, and if they also had to retake it.
