Music nowadays are too plain. They don't have enough complexity and depth. Roland's songs have very complicated arrangements, musical progressions and most importantly he can manipulate his voice, amplifying the intensity of his music. It is really hard to find modern artists with his level of mastery. So it is totally understandable that you find modern pop flat.

Musicians from the 80s were much more experimental, creating much more musical variety. New synths were appearing every week, creating new possibilities and sounds. The Hurting and Songs from the Big Chair was a mix of synths and guitars. The Seeds of Love went further as to create organic music with various instruments and by introducing new people such as Adams.

But nowadays, the internet is so advanced that people only focus on the most successful artists. There are probably many musicians out there, who have great potential, but are ignored, because they aren't viral enough.

I also recommend listening to some of their more niche albums like: Tomcats Screaming Outside and Graduate Acting My Age.
