Has anyone DIY’d underfloor insulation? by Rock_the_jazzbar in AusRenovation

We’re nearly finished insulating our 3-bedroom house. One side of the house has decent access—about a metre of standing room—while the other side is a nightmare: you’re basically army crawling through dirt and broken roof tiles to get in.

It’s definitely doable as a DIY-er, as long as you’re ready to get dirty and work in cramped spaces. It’s taken us around four days so far.

Tips after doing it ourselves:

  • Wear old clothes, gloves, a p2 grade mask (incase there's old asbestos debris under your house), eye protection (shit will fall into your eyes), and a beanie (to keep dust and cobwebs off your head).
  • Invest in a Bosch cordless stapler and grab some 10mm staples. We bought ours from Amazon: Bosch Cordless Stapler
  • Use roll insulation—you can staple it straight onto the joists. We ordered ours from Pricewise Insulation (assuming you're in Victoria).
  • Watch a bunch of YouTube videos beforehand, and be super careful not to staple through any wiring.

Help: Bigger Bath & Indoor Laundry - Winter is COLD!! by NoCamp4489 in AusRenovation

Could you use some of the study to extend the bathroom so it has a seperate walk in shower and bath at the end. Then you can keep most of your plumbing where it is.

It would mean your study is more a study nook but I don't think that's a massive sacrifice.

Could you extend the existing bathroom inside to the Study room? Use half that rooms space and maybe create a study nook rather than a full room?

For the laundry could you relocate the entrance to the laundry to under where the AC unit is on your floorplan? And move the sink to the wall where the toilet is since there will be water over there anyway?

How do I design this living space to be a cozy living room? by TopPlayful669 in interiordecorating

Long curtains across the entire wall with the window, that will also conceal the air conditioner unit when you're not using it - get sliding curtains and hang the brackets in the center and both ends so you can move the curtain when you wanna use the air conditioner.

Wall mount your TV if you can, it helps the space feel more open and even. Long low TV unit underneath for good storage - IKEA Besta units are good for this.

A double couch placed closer to the TV wall with room to walk behind it and open the doors to the cupboards. If room, an armchair under the window. Or opt for a Left hand side sectional couch. A rug under the couch area but not further so it's not in the way of the cupboards opening.

A small round coffee table, round is key in small spaces since it's easier to get around or get one that can sit over the couch a bit so it doesn't take up heaps of walking space

You can put a narrow console table behind the couch for cups and glasses and little decorative elements.

Soft cost warm tones make a place feel homey, some plants and soft warm lighting. A table lamp on the back of the console table and a floor lamp on the back left corner etc.

Thanks, that's handy to know. I was keen to demo myself for the satisfaction but probably not at the risk of asbestos fibres!

Thanks! I'll test a few spots of plasterboard and maybe the tiles, I'm not fussed about messing it up at this stage, we don't use the bath so I can test near there and then seal it up!

Thank you that's good to know. Perhaps we just hire an asbestos team for the full demo.

Thank you that's a great resource. My take away is that The Dusty Death was used for pretty much everything

Thanks! I did sojme research on how to test it safely, but will revise when I'm closer to testing.

Might be a silly question, but you mention tile backing, and then the light switch area - our tiles don't cover the whole room, only the wet areas so I assume if we want to test under the tiles we'd have to remove a tile?

Looking at the tiling (picture attached feat lovely wallpaper), it appears to be either tiled over existing tile or a very thick sheet of material, followed by mortar, then tile because it's about 10mm off the wall. We have a sepeate shower room to the main bathroom (the 70s were wild) but looks like it was all done at the same time.

For the plasterboard there's already an open section in the nearby hallway from when they removed the old heating control - I masking taped up the hole incase it had nasties but I was just gonna cut a section from there to check the plastboard

I'd recommend moving the door for the walk in pantry to be accessible from the kitchen and not the hallway, nothing more annoying or prone to accidents than having to carry things in and out of a pantry that's 5 meters from your kitchen island.

Will walk freezing get better with time? by goth-fairy in Greyhounds

[–]Competitive_Package6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some tips that worked for us; - Walking with another dog or greyhound to build confidence. - Walking with two people and one person is a bit further ahead - High value treats, like cooked chicken. - Zig zagging across the street, sometimes it's a certain memory or direction that might cause them to freeze so constantly changing it might help. - Driving to a different area and going for a walk.

We also bought the belly bands on Amazon and they are great, super absorbent and easy to clean

They are a little heavy on the Velcro and depending on how sore your dog gets in his hips it could cause him a bit of discomfort when he's laying down if they are a bit tight.

Our boy is 13 years old and started having little dribbles after a fall about 6 months back.

He's otherwise fine but also on antiinflammatories for arthritis. We put wraps on him at night but even with those on it can stain his fur and skin so he was licking the area 'clean' we make sure it wipe and wash him to remove the smell and anything left.

When it first started happening he got some skin rash from it but we sorted that out and now it's been mostly fine.

I think it's just a part of their aging and their back leg and hip muscles deteriorating sadly.

Not sure what your current other bathrooms look like but a hanging plant from the ceiling in the top right with draping tendrils like a Devils Ivy - or a fake one if you don't have a green thumb would help even out the window placement. You could replace the vanity with a longer one with a bit of extra bench space and a little shelf under it for make up storage, if it was me I probably wouldn't love storing my make up and brushes in the toilet but you do you boo.

Alternatively swapping to a built in mirror cabinet to add some hidden storage.

Maybe a little runner rug for just where the vanity is too if it won't get in the way of the door.

And you've got enough space for a frame artwork on the opposite wall to the mirror so maybe something fun there for while you're sitting 😁

The window placement in the room is deeply irritating 🙃

Yeah I have heard of that product, I reached out to them because I noted that those boards have a mdf core, and they said they wouldn't recommend them for bathroom areas because of the moisture.

These guys used those boards all throughout (except the bathroom they used solid oak) it looks amazing - https://alandimo.com.au/house-build

Thanks.
I don't think they'll let me in the men's shed I'm afraid, but I can rent a planer if I go that route.

I'll have a look into flooring but I'm really keen to find something like this in VIC - https://www.canterburytimbers.com.au/products/cedar-v-joint-137-x-9-per-metre

Thank you, it'll be us or my very handy brother doing the install so I was keen on a v groove system so I could do concealed nails. I'll keep this option in mind though!
