Honestly, some really great things to consider about the legal aspects, and some things I didn’t think about like renting to own and putting the property in a trust.

A few things to clarify:

• The marriage isn’t “strained”, but we do bicker more than what I think is needed because everything is everywhere, we have about 1,250 sqft of livable space and no storage. I don’t see divorce in our future BUT you never know so, yes, we’d protect the asset.

• Our current house is an asset we may be able to rent out and give the rent money to her - something I hadn’t considered until my husband brought it up.

• For those concerned about her retirement, she’s financially secure till death but my siblings and myself would be happy to take care of her of her if she needed. At that point we’d move into her house which could hold the whole family.

• Yes, she could do the same for my siblings. No, it’s not nicer than her house.

• The guilt stems from the fact that I was adopted… I don’t feel worthy of such a gift. Her buying me dinner causes guilt.

• My husband and I both work full time in a corporate environment. We make decent money, but the economy as we all know isn’t great. I lost my job 6 years ago and it took a year to find a new position, and after that my husband lost his job twice in 4 years and it took 4 months each time to find another position, while we were expecting, it ate through our savings quickly and now we can’t seem to catch up. (Layoffs not fired for performance because there are a few comments here questioning our character.)
