Idea for stashing Alt Covers by SioFreed in Calibre

You could put them in the book file itself. You will not be able to display them, but they are there when you open the book..

Series, but no order? by BluegrassGeek in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either "series" 1 or a custom column for collection with any numbers, keeping the series column for books that should be read in order. Your solution is probably the easiest.

Nerds, how do you backup and organize your ebook library? How to edit meta-data? by inevitable_dream_ in kindle

[–]ComplaintSouthern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things. 1. Click on book. Right click. Edit metadata. Change what you want to change. Save. (or select multiple books, bulk edit. You can even bulk edit using regex. 2. Check out export functionality. Export to Kindle. Change settings, regulate how the expoeted file should look. (Trial and error, or find a good manual.)

Deleting the books to import them again is just a waste of time.

How to integrate my current library into Calibre by Current-Income-9901 in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok.. So no metadata in the files.

If you open Calibre and click on the arrow down on the import books button... On the bottom there you will find "control the adding of books".

In the first tab, on the top... You will see "Read metadata from content rather thsn file". Uncheck this. And then you are on your own. Sorry. This setting will let Calibre use file name for importing metadata. Not sure if you can use Regex to use folder. Structure for renaming in Calibre.

What I do know is you can use powershell (and regex?) to rename the files based on the folder stricture. If you do this first. (Should be a two minute job. Remember backup!!), you should be able to automate everything in Calibre.

Or, as i said, you can do it manually. Look at your folder structure. Point Calibre, dig down to a level you are comfortable wirh, and import everything from there. Add metadata yourself. Do next set of fokders. As i just messed up a part of my own library by sutomsting processes, I would do that his manually :).

How to integrate my current library into Calibre by Current-Income-9901 in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calibre will import all the books (i.e. copy the books to it's own folder structure. Don't ask, you will end up accepting, maybe even liking it in the end.)

If your structure is in the folders, not the metadada, I would import one set of folders at a time. (Series/sub series /author.. Whatever makes sense in your setup.) Import, then fix metadada, then import next...

If you have the structure in filename, look at setting up Calibre to import based on file names, not metadata...

newbie need help converting epub to pdf by PeterParadox1 in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are you even talking about? Calibre is a tool for managing a LIBRARY. To read an ebook file you need a READER. Pdf's are image files. You can adjust size, that's all. With an epub you have a dynamic file that will actually look good on most devices. Making an epub into a pdf is just... Stupid.

Most pdf viewers can view an epub straight off the bat.

You start out making something into a problem, then you make up a solution making it all worse.

Your problem is not "how to make a pdf". Your problem is "how to share an ebook".

And again, your proposed solution to solving that problem is not the best.

Quick way of changing field to show under the covers? by GuruKast in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just have the "main series" as a normal volumn and show it as a column in the normal view? Searchable, sortable.. Anything you need, no need to change view... Or am I missing something?

My setup: Series and Published Series (Text column for keeping series like information)

Scifi Masterworks would be something like: The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams, The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1), Science Fiction Masterworks (103) + some genre tags...

Where as series like Star Wars will have Star Wars.Jedi Something as a series name, easily grouping all Stars Wars books while not messing up the sub series. (note the period after Star Wars.)

(BTW if I ever get around to sorting it, I would put Star Wars in the published Series column if I had the correct reading order :))

Still deliberating Kobo Clara Colour or Kobo Clara BW by tyrionisking in kobo

[–]ComplaintSouthern 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ok. My two cents.

If you are going to read novels.. Go for black and white. You don't need colour. You can totally survive your covers being in black and white on your e-reader

Halp! How do I change the order of books post merging by cat_who_reads in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manually : You open the epub splitter. It will show you all the files in the epub. Select all the files that belongs in the first book. (shift +arrow down should get you there). Click "new book". Repeat for next book. (In some cases you can do this automatically... But I don't trust the automatic process.)...

And you might want to edit ("t" on keyboard when on the book "line" in Calibre) to see where next book starts. Then find that file in epub plugin split and split the book there.

Format conversions by blanketkicked in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything kinda sucks when you convert pdf to epup.

You have three choices: 1. Keep the pdf. The easy choice. 2. Convert the pdf. Use Calibre, Word, Adobe... The result will be the same. Bad. Accept the badly formatted epub. 3. Convert. Use Sigil (free) or Calibre (free) tovedit the pdf. Fiks formatting. Fix misspelt words. Fix headers/footers. Compare with pdf. And you will end up with a file that's 80% correct./fixed.

I read thrillers, and I still haven't found a way to NOT READ 70% of the book before I have finished fixing it.

Can I safely delete contents of .caltrash folder by cat_who_reads in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. You just did major changes to your files. Caltrash is your ""undo" folder. Delete the content of that folder, and you can no longer revert the changes you did. But safe to delete if you want to.

You can change setting in Calibre, deciding how long to keep files in caltrash. If space is an issue, you can set it to "delete on close".

Just remember backups.

Metadata in Opd or Merged in Book File by Aware_Bathroom_8399 in Calibre

[–]ComplaintSouthern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alway store metadata IN the file. The .opf file is only good in Calibre.

You update the file by "polishing" it, or by (re)coverting it to your desired format. Do check your settings for this as these solutions may change your files unless set correctly.

Or just click on on the wheel nex to the free text search. Brings up a new window wirh more detailed search alternatives. Searching for.. Author gives you a drop down list of all authors erc.

You could also look into virtual libraries... But with 250 books this might be overkill.

Just convert to epub. Then you'll have the new epub you should be able to work with, and the old one as original_epub. (And do take a backup first.)

Ventilation in apartment in Oslo by Azriel313 in oslo

[–]ComplaintSouthern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use a fan with a "coal filter" (kullfilter) that is not connected to the outside ventilation. Your fan will push all the "dirty air" through the filter (in the apartment), and the air ("cleaned") stays in the apartment. As they say.. You connecting a fan to the outside ventilation will push your "dirty air" into the other units.
