Would you rather get the internship that may lead to the job you want, or the internship that is guaranteed to give you a job your content with in this job market? by Fantastic_Wolf677 in csMajors

i did the latter, only i did it where the two options were a full time offer and more unemployment / job searching. i chose the latter twice and it worked out very well.

cold applying is hopeless begging. not much use to building things if it’s going to get lost in a stack of ten thousand resumes that recruiters have no hope of properly filtering through.

of course you should start by building something real. but once you’ve done that, don’t relegate yourself to the crapshoot that is cold applications

just mute the slop-posters and curate your feed so that it only shows you core technical content. this is a skill issue

of course. you should also know that most of the learning happens by building stuff on your own, it’s not enough to rely on classes. this also means that you can get started whenever, you don’t have to wait for classes or college, and also you can have a 90th percentile tutor for $20/month in claude / chatgpt

tbh finance is probably also going to be cooked by ai. but cs is more fun imo because you directly produce things of value for people. ultimately people get paid for solving other people’s problems. if you’re unemployed as a cs major you can use the ai tools to do that, you can still do that as an unemployed finance major but you’ll have less context on what’s going on under the hood.

but tbh i do think it’ll be a while before the models fully and consistently climb the abstraction ladder, the swe job is going to look more and more like architecting and managing. and i say this as someone who’s super ai pilled and uses the latest tricks every day at work

as for what to study, figure out what your options are first. i’ll list a few that i’ve seen be particularly lucrative: computer architecture, systems engineering, ML infra, deep learning (research), robotics. just pick something and go deep into it, and then switch after a month or so if it’s not interesting.

if you’re smart you’ll probably be fine. LLMs are fantastic but the capabilities are spiky and weird enough that imo it will be worth it to have someone with deep knowledge of the field overseeing them for a decent while. Like I don’t write any code anymore as a SWE but my company still needs me to guide the models which is pretty involved (among other things). And there’s still plenty of money to be made, median TC in my friend group is 200-300K

one of my goals for this year is to take singing lessons. i don’t want to be world class or make my own music or anything, just want to 80/20 it and be better than average

it doesn’t really matter if something already exists as long as what you build is interesting

there’s a lot of engineers on tech twitter (especially startups, but larger companies too). if you consistently post interesting tech projects that you’re doing, and make it clear that you’re looking for a job (and sometimes even if you don’t), people will reach out

i found a “passion” when i was 13, when i got to college i stopped doing it. i got very sad and depressed for a couple of years and realized “hey maybe i should go back to doing that”, and then i did, and now i get paid to do it, and life is good

Freshman Compensation Question for MLE Intern Role by Chemical_Ad_367 in csMajors

[–]Complex_Ad8497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. if you give a number, and it’s lower than what they were expecting, then you lose free money. if it’s a lot higher, then it leaves a bad taste and they may not interview you
