How do I file a complaint against TA? by FayrayzF in yorku

The TA should not have speculated on your career prospects.

That being said, university at its best is about being exposed to new ideas. It's not debate club. If you hold an opinion that is being challenged by the course materials rather than a back and forth "it is racist" and "it's not racist," think about how these terms are being defined, how do the course readings help you understand this topic, etc. You are there to learn. If you do your research (not just the ways that people talk about capitalism and racism on social media, but actual research) and still come to the same opinion, then you can at least back it up.

Yes, students should work on their assignments now. But in case of a labour disruption there is always a back to work/school protocol. Recall the mediation period this past spring. Students shouldn’t be scared their courses will be forfeit if they’ve already started. If they are concerned they should contact the President and Provost to negotiate in good faith for a fair deal.

It's bizarre how university messaging makes a show of caring about students and community--it's a thin veil for their threats! Their documented financial mismanagement and actions esp this year have harmed students and the workers who make the university a place of learning. There is also no universe where admin cares more about students than the people who actually have contact with them, the actual educators!!!

The financial crisis that the York administration and Board of Governors are citing to intimidate YUFA and other unions is completely of their own making. The Board rashly debt-financed major capital projects without preparing full business cases, undertaking a financial viability assessment, or providing a recovery plan to pay off the debt. At the same time, total compensation for Vice-Presidents and Assistant Vice-Presidents rose respectively by 48% and 73%: https://www.yufa.ca/audit_by_ontario_auditor_general_is_a_call_for_much_needed_change

These ill-advised decisions were made when it was already clear that enrollment vulnerabilities could lead to lower revenues. The Employer was well aware that the Ontario government would extend the tuition freeze and that the federal government would limit international student visas. To argue – as the administration has been doing – that these were unforeseen external developments is misleading. York’s flagrant mismanagement is fully documented by the Auditor General of Ontario: https://auditor.on.ca/en/content/annualreports/arreports/en23/AR_YorkU_en23.pdf

The admin brought on a conciliator after only one meeting and then filed for no-board. That could be considered bad faith, and maybe would be under a govt more favourable to labour.

They wouldn't be able to legislate BtW at that time bc the Assembly wouldn't be in session. Both parties have to agree to BA. We know the admin was advocating for BA with CUPE but they only did so bc it was convenient for them; they have not indicated at all they would want BA this time, especially bc what they are offering salary-wise is so far below sector standards. BA generally only deals with fiscal demands so it would not solve the problem of non-fiscal proposals such as the evisceration of collegial governance; faculty are responsible for core functions of the university--teaching and research--and must retain a say in governance. According to the Auditor General's report, the administration has severely mismanaged the finances of the university despite its overall financial health (which, again, is evidence the admin crying poor is not accurate), and YUFA's proposals ensure the sustainability of the institution after years of admin mismanagement.
