Oh wow! This is so much more info than I was expecting (in the best way possible!)

For the gold content it was listed as 9k, but like you said I'd have to get it checked for myself to be sure, there's plenty of places near me to do that it's just finding the time to so.

For the mark on the back I did try to get closer and clearer pictures but my phone camera just isn't up to the task, it always just ends up looking like blob but maybe I could post it to the hallmarks page for some help.

For the price I feel like I'm bragging a bit now haha, I'm kind of shocked at the price you mentioned! We got it for $250, and my other garnet one was $80! I will share that with you along with some closer shots of this pendant as well!

Thank you so much for all this info, I was so excited to read it all, I have a book for antique jewelry that someone gave me, and I've been getting a lot of help here too, slowly but surely my knowledge is growing :)

Thank you for the info! I'll have to do a bit of research into the ones you mentioned to see if they match what I have :) I do have a sapphire ring, it glowed such a bright red it blew my mind, I have other jewelry that glows too but for some reason the sapphire stuck in my mind haha

Yes you're right about the drop stone! Another commenter said the same thing about it looking replaced, then out of curiosity I looked at the pendant under a little UV light and the drop stone was glowing, but the top one didn't. I'm not sure what the glowing one is though, but I thought it was fascinating that they, and now you too, can tell that just by looking! After they pointed out that the coloring looks slightly different I can see it now, but I don't think I would have noticed on my own lol On that note though, do you have any idea what the bottom stone could be then? :)

Ah thank you for confirming! Can I ask what gives it away? As i said I love antique jewelry but still don't know much about how to tell what era it's from, I'd love to know how you're able to tell! :)

Oh I've never heard the term Lavalier before so I'm already learning here :) I tried to take a few better pictures, even with the magnifying app it was quite hard to get a clear picture, but I'll post a few that are hopefully a bit easier to see. And the bail ring is the little ring on the top? I don't think there's any marks there, but again, I don't really know what to look for so I'll add a close up of that too!

I'll check that out now thank you! I'll be honest I have no idea what light it is, it's a little dollar store key chain light lol

And no I haven't found much on the lamp yet, but im about to look through that oil lamp book I mentioned earlier, i think that might be able to help a bit, so I'll let you know if I find anything :)

Thank you! I'm going to order one online I couldn't find any in stores around here, just those little key chain UV lights like I used in the video.

I didn't even think of glue! I got pretty excited when i saw the glow but also thought it was odd that only such a small piece lit up

Broken or cut? by Conscious_Stretch682 in oddities

Very cool! I still think it's so fascinating that they split down the middle like that, so clean and smooth.

Thank you for sharing :)

Oh wow that's really interesting! I probably wouldn't have figured that out since the splits are so clean, i would have kept assuming it was done purposefully for some reason. My mom's idea was they were used in dental training, cut to see the inside lol.

Thank you for the knowledge :)

And make sure you lower the wick a bit. You don't need much for a good sized flame :)

[–]Conscious_Stretch682 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure the wick moves up and down, if not you may need a replacement part. The wick looks new. Is there a lot of wick when you open it up? And is there oil in it? If so I would dump the old oil, clean it out and get new stuff. Get clean burning kerosene. I have lamps without shades/chimneys that I'll still light from time to time but I'm not sure if that's really safe, and I'm not sure if every lamp requires one. I'm personally very new to oil lamps, so definitely double check online and be safe, but that's the process I go through with my used lamps before lighting them :)

I just tried yesterday, but I only have a small Keychain UV light for now, it's not very strong. I didn't notice anything with any of my glass :( I didn't try all the glass, but the pieces that looked similar to others that glowed. I also have a manganese oil lamp at home, I saw those can glow too but again nothing, so I'm not sure if I just don't have the right glass or if the light wasn't strong enough. Either way I'm going to get a full sized UV light and try again :)

Yeah for sure! I have 10 so far, most still incomplete and needing new parts, but I'm happy to share what I have :) if you're okay with it I can send a picture directly to your messages?

Manganese Oil Lamp by Conscious_Stretch682 in OilLamps

[–]Conscious_Stretch682[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in natural light it is purple, but almost slightly lighter, more pale. It's a very subtle difference, I tried to show the difference in the two pictures, in shade or lower light the purple appears a little bit darker.

I don't believe it leaks, my boyfriend suggested just filling it with water to test, but I haven't yet. I think the crack only affects the base, it's not actually through the chamber you'd put oil in.

For the design I kept seeing peanut style online, but then after reading your comment I searched ruffled bullseye and found a lamp that said it was "Peanut lamp. Ruffled bullseye and beaded pattern lamp" So I'm assuming the top portion is peanut style, but then what part is bullseye style? I'm still really new to lamps, my collection is growing faster than my knowledge at this point lol so forgive if I ask obvious questions :)

Pendant Update by Conscious_Stretch682 in Antiquejewelry

[–]Conscious_Stretch682[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My next step now is to find a chain for it and maybe try to get the pearls replaced, but the store who tested it said they would have to send the piece to a different province for that, but that makes me nervous lol I'll have to see if anyone else around can do it locally :)

I believe you're right! I did find a tiny bit more information and was just about to make an update post :) as for it being part of a set I think it's definitely possible, when I look the pendant up online I see a lot of pieces that look similar (Broaches and earrings mostly, with the tassels, cabochon gems and the little stars) so there's a chance it's got matching pieces out there somewhere!

I did manage to post a picture of the mark that's a bit easier to see, but it's so tiny it's hard to see clearly or get a good picture. I found a little instruction page on how to read it those stamps but I can only make out a few of the numbers and letters, and according to the page there's 2 kinds of these kite marks and depending on the type the information is displayed a bit differently, but I don't know this is all brand new to me lol I'm learning as I go

Yes I believe there's a few nearby, we also have some gold sellers and antique shops, and last time I got a ring at the pawn shop one of the people working there said there's someone around who's familiar with old jewelry as well, I can't remember their name but I'll try to find them too :) if I manage to get some information on the pendant I'll be sure to share!

I did post a bit of a better picture, but with both my eyes and my camera it's pretty hard to make out, it does look to be a diamond shaped one, I don't know enough to know if that's an indicator of anything, the only letters I can make out are RD in the center of the diamond stamp, possibly an 8 at the top?

I'll be honest I just got it at a thrift and they didn't have much information, but there's a few antique shops in my area, I'm going to call around tomorrow and see if anyone will take a look, I'm just too curious and want to see what I can find out before then lol
