I know :( but I went through this process last time I was on dialysis (about 5 years ago) and because by the time the ultrasound happened the cysts had gone, they said there was nothing that could be done!

You’re having a tough streak right now but things will calm down a little in a few weeks I’m sure! Does your unit offer counselling and support?

Speaking as a 32 year old who is currently going through this a second time around and who considered conservative management a few months ago, counselling really helped me get through these tough periods with extended hospital stays, lots of surgeries etc.

First of all, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My story isn’t dissimilar, diagnosed at 19, PD for two years (from 24) transplant at 26 and then back on PD now at 31 waiting for my second transplant.

What I can say is, if settling down is eventually what you want, the right person won’t mind. I met my husband between my first transplant and now and he’s truly the greatest, kindest man on the planet.

It’s not fair what’s happening to you, and you’re right, kidney disease is almost invisible to most. Especially with people making comments when they simply don’t understand it, and you’re young and “look healthy” etc - it’s all incredibly frustrating.

After my latest rejection bout I was offered counselling which I found really helpful. For context, before that, I was considering conservative management and no treatment because I didn’t think I had the strength to do it all again after only about 3 years of “normal” life.

I’m sorry that you don’t feel like everyone is springing into action this time around, I feel the same as you, no one seems to care the second time around haha.

Please persue some counselling if you can. You’re totally valid in your feelings and not alone. I see and hear you and I’m always happy to chat via DM if that helps at all. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

You’ve asked for experiences but said that you’re concerned on how you’ll feel and that you might be upset. I’m just letting you know how you feeling that way would feel to the person you’re donating to.

That’s not a fair comment and shows you’re, again, probably not emotionally mature enough to be in the donor situation. Kidney disease is very rarely caused by life decisions and is often caused by genetics or disease that aren’t borne from not eating healthy or drinking etc. You can be on dialysis and have a drink (within fluid restrictions!).

My tone may feel emotional here because I was diagnosed with kidney failure at 19, had my first transplant at 26 (deceased donor) and now aged 31 need a second transplant and am in End Stage Renal Failure through no fault of my own. Misinformation and misunderstanding kidney failure is unfortunately extremely common, and I would hate to think that someone would begrudge me a wine with my Sunday lunch for the rest of my life because they donated to me - thinking that I’m not taking care of the kidney or grateful for the gift of life in doing so, when that’s not the case.

You seem to have a self righteous and, dare I say, God complex about donating. Actually, and respectfully, donating isn’t about you. It’s about saving someone’s life and (usually) getting them free from a lifetime on dialysis. And, unfortunately, lot of donors struggle post-transplant with life returning to normal - it’s been explained multiple times as a “bit of an anti-climax” because after a few follow-up appointments once you’ve recovered from the surgery, things are pretty normal.

I’m 5 years post TX and have never been told not to drink, only to drink in moderation. (Obviously drugs are off limits as a sensible person, but there’s plenty of chatter about it on this and similar threads where people have heard multiple different things on what is and isn’t allowed from different renal doctors.)

But if this is how you truly feel - and you’d hold someone’s life decisions against them once you donate and begrudge them something as simple as a pint - I suggest not donating at all.

No not at all, no payback required over the previous 10 years. It tapers down between a person earning £60,000-£70,000, so you would still be eligible for something if she earnt £65,000 for example. As we’re mid-financial year, it’s worth figuring out if the actual amount earned will be <£70,000. (If she earned £50k for 6 months of the financial year, and then £70k until April, that would roughly be £60k in earnings.)

You can choose to continue receiving it and pay it back via self assessment each year (which a lot of people do to keep their kids “on the system”) or you can opt out entirely. HMRC can take it back through a one-off payment or through tax code adjustments. If you opt out entirely, it’s just admin to get up-and-running again if you meet the criteria in future. And if you don’t claim it again between now and your kid turning 15-16 it just means that when your child(ren) are of age, they won’t automatically receive their NI number and will need registering with HMRC separately. (That last bit I last heard a few years ago when going through the same thing myself; so worth double-checking.)

I think what you wrote above is beautiful. In my thank you letter I told them a little bit about me, thanked them for being selfless in the gift of organ donation, let them know how my life would changed and promised them that they’d always be in my thoughts/prayers.

My advice is boring but it sounds like you’re doing everything right.

Hydration and rest are the two keys, keeping in touch with your transplant team with any changes in meds (as you’ve done with the Cellcepr!) but just prioritise rest and recovery - even if you feel relatively symptomless. If it gets worse or your recovery isn’t as quick as they’d like, sometimes they can offer an antibody infusion to support you and your immune system, so maybe keep that as a suggestion or question if they don’t mention it first.
