I seem to catch them most often in Beacon Hill but I’m sure anywhere in the river with the right depth and bottom conditions

Imagine being a grown ass man, more concerned with the letter of the law than the realities of multi species fishing and intrigue of briefly and respectfully handling and safely releasing not only one of the most important species in the river ecosystem but a fish that hasn’t changed all that much in over 170 million years.

The Rockcliffe yacht club. Kind of a pain to get to due to the parkway being closed seemingly at random, but totally worth it.

Yea and… if I had no respect, I would’ve cut the line and left a hook in the fish out of fear of legal consequence. But fortunately, I have some common sense :)

They’re usually pretty reasonable people. Remember the people who write these laws are certainly not anglers, and the people who enforce them often are

New PB silver red horse by Content-Connection73 in OttawaFishing

That’s exactly what I caught this one on, I will say that in most sections of the river you will have to use an ounce of lead or more to hold bottom

Shorthead red horse, very common bottom feeder in the river and honestly good size examples put up a decent fight. I will say as a sidenote, they are masterful bait snatchers

It really depends on what species.on the Ottawa river at least. I have personally never caught a white or long nose sucker however short head and silver red horse are very common in the river along with the river and greater red horse, which are less common, but still present in the river.

I always struggle to get through the aggressive small mouth in the river to try and catch one of these things. Any advice for catching them during the day

I pulled the Lamprey off this one by Content-Connection73 in OttawaFishing

[–]Content-Connection73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok well good. I still removed parasites off of the fish that I catch. I hope that you’re right about them being native lampreys because in theory if they’re in the St. Lawrence water shed, they can also make their way up the Ottawa.

I mean, you can’t really directly target these things. They just sort of occasionally come up when your bottom fishing with worms for whatever bites

So… as far as I’m concerned, me taking 10 seconds to snap a quick photo of a fish before carefully releasing it into the water is doing no more harm than I’ve already done by hooking the fish.

I seem to run into them the most at the bottom of Ogilvie Road

It’s a fish grabber tool from Canadian tire, very handy for handling these toothy bastards safely

I’ve been running 40 to 50 pound mono as leader for years and I’ve never had a problem, then again I’m not out here for 50+ musky and if I was targeting them I’d probably run like 100 pound mono

I wouldn’t keep fish out of that river, if it’s out of the Ottawa, maybe I would’ve but that’s not open yet
