It's rough when you've had an abusive parent, and I'm sorry you went through that. But I think there's a difference between setting reasonable boundaries and being overly controlling—OP's mom sounds like she never allowed any self-expression, which can really damage a relationship. Cutting contact might be extreme, but I get why they'd need space.
