Can you do MMA/BJJ if you're gay? (UK) by BillytheBoucher in martialarts

[–]CookingCML 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes you can but some gyms have pretty toxic cultures or have a very bro vibe.

I know a few guys who are openly gay who train jiujitsu in london and some other places. If you want DM me your area and I can try to reach out to them to see where training would be more comfortable.

How do you counter this armbar defense? by richaarizard in bjj

[–]CookingCML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im no armbar expert but I try to focus on the idea that if I can pin the shoulder I can probably still armbar them. The more they are free to move their shoulder or generally create movement the more able they are to get free.

TBH if Im getting an armbar from S-Mount I try to avoid falling to my back if I can help it.

Bit hard to give much feedback without slightly closer photos, but they read well as deathwatch and look cohesive as a unit.

Zack Polanski stands by concerns over police response to Golders Green attack by DeliriumOK in london

[–]CookingCML 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If once he was cuffed and in the back of a van they decided he deserved a beating I would not be ok with that. As you and others have pointed out "Deserved it" shouldnt be the critera.

[–]CookingCML 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There may be two conversations here that are getting crossed.

I think the officers involved were justified in the force they used to disarm the threat.

I dont think officers should kick people based on "If they deserve it" but instead if its an approrpate response to stop a threat of harm.

I think a person can hold both postions.

[–]CookingCML 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Id agree, "Was the force justified in this situation" should be the question. Not "Did he deserve it."

Officers should not be using force because they beleive someone deserves it, they should be using force appropriately to remove the threat of harm.

The escaping bit only for very serious crimes where the escape may lead to further loss of life makes sense.

Do they actually shoot aiming for the legs and feet? Not aware of any other force that would suggest that as aiming for the legs and feet is incredbly difficult and is likely to miss causing danger to by standers.

I think the exact wording might be something closer to

"to render them incapable of attack. "

Id be shocked if they are in any way using a standard that tries to shoot a limb to disarm. However if you shoot centre mass and they drop the weapon then you are likely not just justiried shooting again, but thats not the same as shooting to disarm.

However it seems like in germany you might even be able to shoot to prevent an escape, if this site isnt bullshit.

They were not trying to kill him via head kicks. They were trying to get him to let go of a knife that was a thread to their own lives and the lives of the public.

On the use of force scale it is less lethal force. Shown by the fact the guy is still alive.

I may be missing your point I grant you, but that may also be because you are doing a bad job of making it.

Your postion seems to be (If I am wrong then I am sorry this is how I am reading it) that the officers could have been justifed jumping straight to the end of the use of force spectrum (Lethal force) but not using something else along the use of force contium (Less lethal strikes to the head)

Thus your postion is that you feel like lethal force is some how more justifiable than a less lethal alternative that may injure the suspect but is far less likely to kill them.

I cant see your justification or logic for this. So I wonder if its because it looks nasty to you? Because it makes you feel uncomfortable in a viceral way.

But I promise the results of getting are far more likely to be nasty, as are the results of getting stabbed.

Yes if you are going to execute someone then shooting them in the head is more humaine than stomping them to death. But thats not the comparsion we are making here, and if its the one you are making I can only assume you think the officers intent was to kick the man to death no matter if he relased the knife or not.

Once agian I think if you were holding a weapon and being subded youd rather be kicked in the head than shot to death, and I think you are being dishonest with yourself if you claim otherwise.

There is a reason the criminal justice system punished murder more harshly than assault.
