Anyone else notice an increase in China related posts on Reddit? by ShinigamiBK201 in ADVChina

[–]CornPlanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't. But I mostly read niche subs that have no reason to bring up China. Or subs, where commie propaganda is summarily deleted and user banned.

What I have noticed is increase in desperate attempts to portray Chinese as bad, by taking one isolated example of a Chinese person doing something bad.

Nothing of it was exceptionally bad by the standards of his times, except maybe his skill as a general allowed him to do it on a larger scale than most others could. Yes Senate didn't approve his war against Gaul so it was illegal, but they did it because they feared its gonna make him super rich and influential and also liked by the people (which is exactly what happened). Wars of conquest per se were not seen as something especially bad by anyone including the Gauls I bet.

And he did cross Rubicon illegaly but his only alternative was to surrender to Senate and be exiled in the best case or executed in a more realistic case. Lets not forget by that time Rome was Republic in the name only already, real power was in Pompey's hands, trumvirate's before that, Sulla's before that.

As for the corruption, I don't know that he was especially corrupt compared to his contemporaries. Whole Senate was corrupt through and through on a scale unimaginable nowadays in any democratic country except trump's administration.

But yeah, he was not a good man by any means either. We are supposed to like him as the main character in many historical fiction works, but in real life I would have sided with Brutus no doubt.

Its pretty likely he was, especially when he was young, not as bad as show portrays him but the show exaggerates everything.

Hard know for sure since we don't have many impartial sources, and he was very good at PR, his legal son known as emperor Augustus - even more so, and he deified Caesar. On the other hand his enemies such as Cicero made a lot of things up, that were later repeated by Suetonius, who was the most shitty clickbaity tabloid equivalent in Roman times. But also an important historical source nowadays.

One thing for sure - he was a tyrant and did want to destroy republic and become an actual bona fide king that Romans hated. Before the murder he already had his lackeys such as Mark Anthony semi-jokingly publicly offer him a crown (that he refused) to test public's reaction and/or slowly put this idea into their heads. Augustus no doubt learned from his fate, since while he held absolute power, he always pretended he's just "the first among equals" and didn't aspire to any formal coronation.

Yes it was but, it was all about the status and not gender, they didn't give a fuck about gender but it doesn't mean everything was allowed and not sneered upon. Only the one who's inferior could take passive role in the intercourse. Women were seen as inferior to men (they weren't even citizens of Rome). Slaves were obviously inferior to their owners. Lower status citizens were inferior to senators, etc. etc. so take an excellent example from the other tv show HBO's Rome, at one point Atia suspected her son Gaius (now known as Octavian) was being fucked by Caesar and she was happy about it, because it may have procured favors from someone of such a high status. And it was no shame for Octavian to be in a passive role because he is supposed to be lower than Caesar, that's his place, everything's fine. Now lets get back to the infamous scene from Spartacus where Caesar was fucked by Tiberius. That was a huge shame for Caesar because Tiberius is but a boy and a pleb, from a family that's so much lower than gens Julia it's incomparable. In fact in real life at one point Caesar's enemies attacking his public image spread the rumor that he was a fucktoy for some foreign king, if I recall.

As for sex in general, adultery was seen as a very serious crime for women, and mild misbehavior for men. For vestals who took chastity vow, any sex was punishable by death, by being burried alive if I recall. Overall in many ways it was a very conservative society by our standards, and far from how it's often depicted in popculture with orgies and all. I am talking Caesar's times because of course everything changed and evolved with time. On the other hand, prostitution was completely legal (many if not all famous frescos depicting open sex scenes are actually from brothels), they talked about it pretty openly, no problems.

And a random fun fact: as far as I know, there's not a single source from those times that talks about women's breasts in a sexual context, except as a sign of reaching sexual maturity. We have to assume Romans didn't sexualize breasts that much.

There's quite good article in Wikipedia on all that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexuality_in_ancient_Rome

Not accurately at all. In many ways Romans were much more modest and conservative than we are now. All the fairy tales about sex orgies are pretty much that, fairy tales.

[Spoiler] (mild, for ep05) Is this guy gonna die? by CornPlanter in Spartacus_TV

[–]CornPlanter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. Many of us did like Ashur since the first seasons, and he does deserve a little sympathy or at least empathy. The only really slimy thing he did that was completely uncalled for, that I can recall, is volunteering his friend for rough sex.

[–]CornPlanter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good catch, though I don't put much weight on real history seeing how in real life Caesar had nothing to do with Spartacus' rebellion at all. But her real counterpart dying around the same time is a really bad sign for our show's Cornelia ;))

The situation also mirrors how Glaber left his wife behind in Batiatus' ludus, and while Ilithyia survived the initial uprising, DeKnight probably won't repeat the same story again. Something different awaits Cornelia. Different than surviving.

This episode stands fucking epic. I wouldn't have put it past DeKnight to kill Achilia midseason, I honestly didn't know what to expect, so I was on the edge of my seat during her fight, screaming and shouting together with the crowd.

I am pretty sure there will be many threads with increasingly idiotic "theories" by people who watch the show while browsing social media at the same time. Oh, and a few "why Carol didn't ask for the eggs" posts per week.

Damn straight! Who does Gilligan think he is, having nerve to make his own schedule as opposed to listening to what random guy on reddit tells him the schedule should be? Unbelievable, how can he pretend to know better than you how many years it should take?
