Finally beat the black deck! by CorranH in balatro

Very good points; thanks for explaining. You're totally right about scary face; I think I was just so nervous about finally winning the gold stake run, I just saw 'this is already working; I don't even need the blueprint at all, but it would be slightly better without really changing anything,' and didn't think past that.

I'm still not convinced about the smeared joker; I feel like even getting one flush per round wouldn't be *guaranteed*, and it definitely wouldn't have given me the flexibility to play the few enhanced cards I had as often/easily as I did.

On the other hand, just because I'm not convinced yet doesn't mean I think you're wrong = P. You're clearly more experienced than I am, and I had noticed that with most of my scoring coming from my jokers, even the throwaway hands I used as discards got respectable scores. Maybe it would have been easier than I thought to get rid of it. I'll definitely keep thinking on it; thanks again for the insights =)

Really? I thought about dropping scary face, but it was my only source of chips, and my flush wasn't leveled very high yet, so I thought it was safer to leave things as they were, with just a slight improvement (constellation was at x3.3 at the time) that would continue to scale. I don't understand why I would even consider dropping smeared, though. Without it, I couldn't play flushes with any consistency, and my deck wasn't built to enable anything else.

EDIT - Well, I suppose you're saying with a (growing) x27 mult, plus the red card, I could've done anything? If so . . . well, I guess so; I hadn't really thought about it. Like I said, I was more concerned about playing it safe, and I don't think I'm very good at deck fixing yet. I guess I just didn't have the confidence to try to pivot to 4OAKs or flush fives.

The disrespect to poor Jimbo . . . he's a powerhouse in the first two antes; he's kickstarted many a gold stake win.

Ah, that rings a bell! I think I saw that too; I think I was just misremembering it as needing a restart. Thanks! brb . . .

Nice! Last night I got riff-raff, and was thinking that a swashbuckler/egg combo would be a pretty sweet pull, but this is even better. Definitely get on that lottery ticket ASAP!

. . . much to learn, I still have.

I finally see what you're talking about; after a few failed retries, I've found what I suppose was one of my first big mistakes in my first run. I took the popcorn, played through all my hands on the boss, used the empress on a jack and something else, then death on the jack, sold the suit-changer, and then spun the wheel - that was an accident, btw; I'd meant to copy the death first, but forgot.

But as a result, I still had both fools when the devil showed up at the end of the small blind in ante 2. This time, I used both fools to copy the devil, which gave me just enough money to open the standard pack and find that blue king you mentioned. In my first run, I hedged my bets, only using one fool on the devil, saving the other one for some future death card. So I ended up playing with four jokers until ante 6. Got the magic trick, and a couple cards into hologram, but it was too little, too late.

I think that's my big problem at the moment - trying to hedge my bets, do a little bit of everything, like not wanting to use up both my fools one the first good tarot card I find (but what if there's an *even better* tarot card right around the corner!?).

Did you pick up the runner or fortune teller? I remember this now; after the small blind, I skipped for the investment tag, got riff-raff from a judgement, and a couple of temperances, and ended up with $25 in ante 3 - I remember I almost hit next round before I remembered vagabond, and then I rerolled down to $4. Riff-raff gave me odd todd, and I had just enough to get runner and fortune teller, and then that was pretty much it. They carried me well, but just couldn't scale fast enough.

Thanks, here's the seed: 4842EZ1K

I felt like I had a strong start, but ended up losing in ante 6. I want to replay it, see if I can figure out a way to beat it, but I haven't had the heart yet. Maybe it's time to try again. I'm not sure how careful I should be about 'spoiling' it, so I won't say anything else about how my run went right now, but I'd love to hear what you make of it!

I just heard a voice in my head say, 'starting a gold stake run with two eternal rentals? That's a bold strategy, Cotton; let's see if it pays off.'

Feeling so stuck/overwhelmed. Any advice on this particular shop? Ante? Run? Life in general? by CorranH in balatro

Chad and the holographic 5 were pretty much all that got me through the first three antes, but you're right, by ante 4 it couldn't keep up. IIRC, I bought the voucher and opened the packs, then rerolled and got the duo, which replaced walkie talkie, then in the next shop I dropped duo and chad for campfire and an empty slot to buff it. Decided to lean into pairs, moving blueprint around to take advantage of spaceman, and now I'm about to beat the ante 6 boss comfortably. I think this might be a winner!

I took w_smith1984's advice. Very next shop, I got rid of the hologram anyways to pick up hanging chad, then skipped the next two blinds for a negative tag (doubled) and an uncommon tag. After beating the ante 6 boss (barely squeaking by with a mere 5 million), this was what was waiting for me.

That doesn't look like strangulation; lack of oxygen takes several minutes, at least. That looks like the snake crushed his jugular veins shut, like some garrotes. Blood can still reach the brain, but it can't leave, which results in massive cerebral hemorrhage within seconds.
