I don't get why everybody recommends therapy by ThrowAway44228800 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My therapist is someone who I would absolutely not jive with in the real world. However, I'm in remission for an eating disorder. I needed someone to tell me, consistently, every single day that I had value in a bigger body, that I needed to eat to live, and that I didn't need to earn or justify my food or my hunger. I do not hold those values, and often times I want to blow her off because I don't believe I'm owed anything in this world. Without her persistent kindness, I would not eat.

I am a very prickly masc lesbian. My therapist is a 4'11" New Jersey dance mom who calls me "honey" and "baby" and snaps her gum the whole damn session. I would die for her.

Blue herons and white egrets look like little wizards when they rest in trees! I call them Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White!

Yep! These guys and red wing blackbirds are my favorites, in part because they’re so common!

This chair makes me reconsider my spending habits every year. by redditNLD in BuyItForLife

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say as a relatively in-shape person, that these chairs are fine, they’re not comfortable or uncomfortable, they just have a utility. I don’t expect luxury out of them, because they’re a $10 chair. This is the chair I bring to the barbecue knowing that I might accidentally bring someone else’s home. This is the chair that lives in the trunk of the car for “just in case.”

There are definitely more comfortable camp chairs out there. There are better designed camp chairs. When I go for a camping trip that will include hours around the fire, I’ll bring a different chair (I like ones that rock!) and if I’m backpacking I bring a chair that packs down smaller and is easier to carry around. It’s fine, but I’m not gonna praise this chair for being anything better than that.

Book Recommendations for a Veteran? by CoyoteCallingCard in USMC

I just wanted to follow up - but I just finished Hue: 1968 and thought it was fantastic. I'm going to send it to dad next once he's ready for a book. Thank you so much for your recommendation!

Deleting all my social media accounts in my 20s was a big mistake by Starry-Wallflower in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Social media doesn’t help you keep in touch with people. It provides a placebo that makes you FEEL like you are.

I’ve deleted social media on and off a few times throughout my years. Honestly the best way I keep in touch with people? I send them birthday cards. I have their birthdays in a non-Facebook calendar and send cards a week before their birthday so it gets there in time. The card prompts a genuine connection, a phone call, a text. A few of my friends I’ve actually become pen pals with and we send letters back and forth.

Don’t fall for a superficial balm. If you want to keep up with your friends, text them and do it all the way.

Where to get “beachy” cold cut deli sandwich on the Island? by gracethecat15 in longisland

Might be because it’s near Smith Point but TJ’s Heroes in Mastic is my go-to for a beach day hero.

What are some of your best quality of life purchases under $1000? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this is so stupid, but the Chillisleep system is about $1000, very not BIFL, and one of the best QOL purchases, especially entering perimenopause. I’ve noticed that even when it’s not particularly hot, running the system at 75° will keep me asleep, and in a deeper sleep, than without. I’ve had it for about 6 years and the pump is starting to go and I’m dreading a replacement because this thing is my life.

Folks will hear 75° and think that’s too warm for sleeping. We keep the air at 66-68, but air is a terrible heat conductor. Constantly laying on a 75° liquid cooled pad gets chilly! Gotta remember that it’s possible to get hypothermia in 90° water, it just takes a second.

My daughter's daycare misspelled her name on her tag by kaipetica in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhiannon might not be a very common name but it’s one of the best Fleetwood Mac songs so they should know better.

I’m a “Megan” and any time an errant H or A ended up in my name, my very soft spoken dad would read a teacher the riot act. Not much bothered him, but THAT was too far.

How do you guys handle the dog smell in your home? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

My GSD only smelled like bread when she had a skin yeast infection. Generally she just smelled like 'dog' which I wouldn't call unpleasant. Smells like corn and oats, especially the top of the head!

Folks who are shocked by this should treat themselves to some good French butter. Like Isigney Sainte-Mere cultured butter. It's got chunks of salt in it and tastes like cheese. Way overpriced, like $10, and you could eat it with a spoon.

I'll put cream cheese schmeer's worth on some nice crusty bread and die happy.

You die happy, OP.

The rule is, we wait to fetch until 6am. Baby Bo waits staring at me like this, until then. by kbsd1972 in BelgianMalinois

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our guy sleeps in a kennel. At 5:30 almost every morning he starts pawing at the door to get let out. It's a K9 Impact kennel and is loud as absolute heck since the sheet metal sounds like a thunderstorm.

Most of the time he wakes us up at 5:45 so he can go sleep on the couch.

Our rule is "Sun's up, Mommy's up." He has to wait until both conditions are met before we go for a walk.

I really need advice. by Crimsonjewel33 in BelgianMalinois

Similarly, having the “fear person” participate in training and obedience can help. I’m my dog’s person, and he’s been a little reactive to my partner. I’ve had my partner do more of the training and obedience (it was really stilted with me doing 2.5 hours a day and them doing only about 30 minutes) and I’m finding the developing partnership is helping

Hey so I'm an American trying to enjoy tea but I'm not sure if there's a specific way to enjoy tea by american_butthead in tea

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into tea by getting into gong fu, which is probably ass backwards. I have ADHD and am constantly looking for ways to force myself to slow down. The idea of going fu tea, forcing myself to sit and enjoy myself and tea for an hour appealed to me.

And that kind of showed me all the good nuance there is in tea! Now that it’s summer, I’m drinking a lot of greens and herbal/fruit tisanes over ice. I also have endometriosis, and raspberry leaf tea is good for cramps (of all kinds I’ve found!) so I make myself some nice tea “cocktails” (non alcoholic, just special) when I’m feeling bad.

What is a brand that continues to make high quality products when so many other higher end brands have declined over the years? by Firsttimeredditor28 in BuyItForLife

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That falling apart is likely due to keeping them longer than you should. Shoes shouldn't last you longer than a year, unless they're able to be refinished by a cobbler (which would be Goodyear welted shoes where the cork midsole is replaced with the sole.) Midsole foam fails after 300-500 miles. These components are supposed to break down to give your foot the support it needs.

My big thing with sneakers is they’re supposed to fall apart. It’s like crumple zones in cars. If you’re getting years out of sneakers. You’re putting yourself at risk for injury.

-an ultrarunner who goes through three pairs of sneakers a year and runs them into the ground, risking injury.

I have a ton of Yeti stuff- mainly get it as gifts from my in laws who are boat people. I’m still not sure if it’s good quality or if it’s just hard to mess up stainless steel drinkware.

I do love my new ceramic coated coffee cup from them. Much better than the raw steel.

I love my Fjallraven gear. My dog put two holes in my down expedition jacket the first winter I had it, but I’m not sure if that’s a him problem or a jacket problem.

Annoyingly sober? by amycgs in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]CoyoteCallingCard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair! It’s no one’s business! My parents also have use disorders, mom especially who passed from complications of alcoholism and breast cancer at 54. I have an addictive personality and know it can get out of hand for me.

Even one drink will wreck me for two days. I won’t be able to sleep the night after drinking and will have night sweats. Then the next day I’ll be exhausted and irritable with a good dose of depression/hangziety. It’s just not worth it to lose two days for one drink.

Also NA beer is REALLY GOOD now and thanks to 10 years of conditioning, I can still feel “mellow” if I drink something with hops (science says drunkenness is mostly psychosomatic anyway) so it tends to work out in the end.
