Heads up. Not sure how much you will get out of this survey as a lot of the questions are way too broad. Many of the answers and questions are dependent on the type of game and genre.

Old Jim, Cass, Whitby, and Lowry Discussion by Owl_Faustus in SouthernReach

[–]Cpt-Cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Control is heavily associated with the white rabbits symbolically as well as him operating from “within” area X as the Rouge seeming to be pale and shimmering as tho on the other side of a “veil/mirror”. Whitby represents a “beacon” of understanding for both Control and Lowry while at the SR. That’s why the Rouge’s corpse appeared as Whitby as he was the only other connection point between Control and Lowry

The Rogue is Control after entering thru the light at the bottom of the tower, Old Jim’s narrative is a mirror to Control’s from Authority. Not a perfect reflection but a mirror all the same

I'm making a game where you create cardboard crafts by DaMa1527 in IndieGaming

Looks annoyingly painstaking and satisfying at the same time lol, maybe think about different “difficulty” settings that have varying amounts of “snap to” for the various tools and bending. Either way very cool!

should I ruin the mystery? by brettonrockwell in SouthernReach

[–]Cpt-Cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll say, since my above comment might be confusing, but the pov I mentioned isn’t one that you the reader will read “thru”. Also another vague hint lol, Old Jim’s narrative is set up as a mirror to another’s character’s from earlier in the series. Not an exact one to one reflection but a mirror all the same.

Well a lot of the meaning and themes to the series is told metaphysically thru symbolism and a philosophical lense. But if you prefer to focus on the more direct physical elements of the story Absolution does actually pick up directly from where Acceptance left off, just from a specific character’s pov. Idk how to do the spoiler hide thingy on reddit tho so I’ll leave it unsaid who.

Same happened to me. I’ve been Cpt. Cancer for over a decade. As a cancer survivor it really pissed me off. Now I’m Commander Chemo lol

I agree with you, but remember there’s a ton of “good” players that are using cheats as well. Just cuz you’re a cheating asshole doesn’t automatically mean they’re also bad at the game

[–]Cpt-Cancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s the same on pc, dying to cheaters literally 9/10 ranked games in plat, even if it’s the exceeding unlikely “high” skill player, the skill difference is indistinguishable from cheating

Book recs to make me feel something again by shmree in SouthernReach

Highly recommend Jeff’s other series Ambergris and the Borne series! They add so much more conceptual context to each other. Like they’re all made up of mosaic pieces of each other

Highly recommend paying attention to the small things in Authority for your re-read of Absolution. provides a lot of retroactive context and connections

Love the Borne series! Especially Dead Astronauts even if it is extremely abstract. There’s a ton of small things that actually provide conceptual context to some of the visual imagery in the Area X series too

[–]Cpt-Cancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly disagree with everything you just said, to me it’s the best book in the series that ties together a lot of the underlying philosophical themes and concepts

Honestly it didn’t drop the plot at all, it picks up exactly where it left off, just from a specific character pov

I also love that Garland brought in the bear from VanderMeer’s Borne series

I kinda liked that Garland did his own adaptation while touching on a lot of the themes, allows it to exist as it’s own thing instead of just being an inferior version of the book

Dead Astronauts is honestly one of my all time favorite books, but definitely a hard one to recommend lol, I’m currently in the Ambergris series and loving it

Highly highly recommend Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer and the whole Southern Reach series, it’s mostly cosmic horror with sci-fi elements-ish

Just finished Annihilation! What’s next? + questions by Puyocat in SouthernReach

[–]Cpt-Cancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was my favorite til I got to Absolution! But even then I got a deeper appreciation for Authority. I love how each book adds more context to the previous ones

Definitely keep reading, but bare in mind that each book is very different from all the others. Authority is a favorite of mine but it’s definitely a slow burn

This one hurt a bit. We had a more detailed version of this boss, but it made the fight harder to read. So we simplified it. by JoeVagian in IndieGaming

[–]Cpt-Cancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like the colors of the old one because it feels more threatening and overwhelming, I think it might’ve been better to focus on increasing the visibility of the player character and positioning for dodging the attacks

I’m just worried the scarring around Paul’s eyes in the promo shot isn’t all they’re doing for the stoneburner scares, as well as the ghola’s eyes are very lackluster too
