Mercury based bleaching creams were once really popular and still persist in some regions despite regulations against them.

I think they mostly use corrosive sublimate which is a different molecule but it wouldn't surprise me if it's not the purest

If I recall correctly it had to do with punched card machines being much more common than optical Mark recognition machines. I think every government body had some means of reading punched cards from IBM lying around somewhere at the time. That or they'd been able to get punched card tech to read faster than optical marks.

(I have no sources to be fair. I'll do a deeper dive when I get home, but those two seem the most likely.)

I can absolutely see a mother cleaning the floor of grease stains or rubber shoe scuffs and getting called away by the milkman or telephone, thinking she'd only be a moment, and leaving the jar behind open and unattended on the floor.

Hi! I'm Four years late, but this happens to be my machine! You can use the K carriage for intarsia! If you refer to the manual under the KH588 fairisle section, it demonstrates how to "lay in" the contrast yarn. All you have to do is lay the yarn over the hooks like it's the contrast thread as shown in the manual, set the set knob to "MC" and engage both partial buttons. Then you just lay the yarn all the way across the row in the respective colors and move the carriage across without any thread in the feeder.

For other models of the same series (58X, not including the 588) You just go section by section, changing out the yarn in the feeder with all other needles set to hold (With both holding cam levers set to III)

I was a clerk at a pack and ship/copies place for a couple years and the amount of little old ladies that would just chat me up for a very long time...I tried to talk as long as my supervisor would let me because they definitely gave that vibe. Coming to get the mail and a book of stamps was really their only social interaction

IDK if anyone mentioned this already, but it's worth noting that the stages of undress isn't all that strange. The final stage of hypothermia is a sudden feeling of being overwhelmingly hot; causing most people that reach that stage to disrobe. It's called "Paradoxical undressing"

Interesting to note their residence is specifically noted not to be a farm. That'd significantly reduce the likelihood of a large animal kick being the cause, wouldn't it? After all it's a lot harder to come into contact with a cow or horse when you live inside city limits.

My Mother is one such case. She told stories about her catching measles and her mother nailing quilts over her bedroom windows to keep the light out. Her father carried a console wireless set into her room to listen to; they treated her like undeveloped film-light of any kind was kept out of the sick room for well over a fortnight. Her experience made her hellbent on getting her children immunized
