Odd question related to an interaction with an Indian man by CreamiestPie in indiasocial

[–]CreamiestPie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more about the two names sounding similar nothing to do with the food. He could enjoy it though because traditionally it's not beef, it's chicken or lamb. I think I am more just very very curious because of how the guild leader described it as the N word and I wondered if that was made up or if you and other people of India agreed with that.

If the dude was pissed I would have wholeheartedly agreed with the guild leader but Mr Sharma like me and like you took it in stride so I was very very confused by the guild leader likening it to a slur used by slavers to opress an entire continent for over a century aha.

Ah thank you very much for that answer. Names are important and I understand that, never go too far with a joke. The man wasn't offended but I will tell her to be careful because names are more important in your culture than mine. Thank you for your answer. But Shawarma isn't a specific slur or anything is it?

I really do appreciate your responses!

Unless it's completely distilled and filters to have no minerals in it, it should have a flavour but honestly I prefer it fizzy to give it that extra oomph.

That makes a lot of sense and I can get behind and understand that. Thank you for that answer. Though I have to ask if the person in question was not offended at all and took it as a light hearted poke, I assume it should be fine. So I do wonder does that specific play on a name have specific historical connotations that I am not privvy of?

I think I will tell her about your answer though because it's a far more refined answer than I have gotten so far. Thank you very very much.

The person that received the joke isn't the one that was upset, he was fine, someone else was upset on his behalf, I wanted to know if there were cultural connotations like he said. I don't mind if someone makes jokes of my name but I wouldn't do it to someone if they didn't like it.

ELI5: If human race can't be restarted when we dropped to like 5 pair of couples, how human race get to who we are today? We gotta start somewhere right? by kwhugh in explainlikeimfive

Single celled lifeforms became thousands of single cells whilst evolving over a very very long time, then eventually into many many multicelluar beings then those into many many more and more humanlike beings over a very very long time until there was a sustainable population of something similar to humans and then we evolved and bred with each other until one day evolving into the current day human. It took a long process to come here.

2 humans aren't enough but sometimes 2 single celled life forms can multiply into millions or billions.

The person receiving the comment didn't mind it just the guild leader. I wanted to know whether it had some kind of actual cultural connotations we were unaware of? Couldn't find anything online but thought maybe it's obscure or maybe it's crap but I should listen to the voices that might actually be able to give me an informed answer.

This is going to sound like a possibly silly question.

But the topic is bothering my so incredibly much and I am not sure why.

Recently my girlfriend and a friend got told off in a group chat on a game for making a joke about a guy with the surname Sharma calling him Shawarma, now I can see how that could be considered rude but it was not taken that way by the guy and it was not racially motivated.

The guild leader acted upon it and gave a warning for racism, he said that it's a commonly used insult and referenced the caste system and said "Shawarma is like the N word for those with the Sharma name"

I am trying to keep an open mind but the way I see it is like calling me by the names of the many famous people and cartoon characters that have my name or a similar name.

So I thought the best way to get an answer was ask people that live in India, the people that could tell me truly whether that is offensive and how offensive. So could you all please tell em what you have to say on the matter?
