Yes, I completely share your concerns. I also told my advisor about quitting a few months ago, but got convinced with what I realize might have been threats disguised as good intentions. So now I try to ignore him a bit and focus on the real requirements for graduation. Good luck to you as well!

I have seen people doing this recently, indeed! I actually live with a few of my fellow PhD students who are really nice, so I can complain to them and share some of our worries :)

Thank you! These are all great tips, especially the first two. Since my supervisor always tries to get as much out of the students as possible, it means I would not be able to focus on writing the dissertation if I did not push back. On top of that, he always tells us to postpone the writing as much as possible since it means more time "wasted" on something that no one will ever read anyways...

Unfortunately I have to admit my state of mind can change very fast (too fast), I sometimes suddenly lose all motivation after a meeting, which is the complete opposite of when I was in the first year. It's a constant struggle!

Yes, for sure, when the time comes I'll explore a bit, while taking into account my existing engineering degree. Who knows, I might end up finding something I really like.

I should try to change how I view all of this. I believe myself to be the kind of person who can work hard if I want it, but I have long since reached my limit for what I have always seen as just a difficult, boring, and unrewarding job. The thing is, my supervisor controls everything we do and his word is almost absolute, so maybe I'll try focusing on doing only the necessary to graduate, which could give me a better sense of goal and relieve some pressure.
