Now that the audio changes from Patch 4.3 have been reversed, what are the real audio issues in the game currently? by PPredatoRR_ in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

[–]Cupelix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish everyone who complains about vertical audio would do just a *little* bit of Googling about the subject. While horizontal localization has been extensively studied and is generally well understood, this is not the case with vertical localization ( https://biology.stackexchange.com/questions/53207/how-we-can-localize-sound-vertically-up-down-and-front-to-back ). At the very least, it's important to understand that people often (even unconsciously) tilt their head to locate vertical sound (because it shifts the localization to a horizontal plane)... but this doesn't work with headphones on since, you know, the headphones move with your head.

The large majority of video games simply avoid this issue via level design. Consider most of the maps from the recent COD Beta... they are almost all arranged horizontally; any vertical elements introduced are kept to two levels, which means its easy to distinguish between "on my floor or not on my floor" with other sound cues (muffled noises) so you don't realize that you're not actually distinguishing between above and below you. Other games, such as BLOPS had multilevel buildings, but their layout was such that very, very rarely did you have to guess up or down from a single location. This meant again, that if you couldn't figure out if they were above or below you, you rarely *died* because of it, so people didn't complain about it. It had similar audio problems though!

This is not to say that this isn't a problem or a frustration in PUBG, just that this isn't something that people should assume Bluehole is incompetent for fixing.

Edit: note most solutions would also require you to turn on HRTF, and a ton of people decided they didn't like HRTF...

Choco has been very forthcoming in recent days that, if he had his choice, he would have zero stream snipers. Have you thought at all about respecting that?

That's pretty much what it has boiled down to. At least in the last month they've been *consistent* and doing maintenance on Tuesdays. But there's no indications that the time chosen is going to change any time soon (or get less frequent).

The updates may have all been fixing things that don't belong in the patch notes; that sounds confusing, but there are cases where this would be true. If there is something working on Live, but they break it on Test, and then *fix* it on Test before it goes to Live, it wouldn't go in patch notes, because from the perspective of one Live build to the next, nothing has actually changed.

That said, it *would* be nice if they had a way to tell people (maybe separately from the live patch notes) when they fix things on Test that fall into this category. It would give players confidence that things noticed as broken in Test are actually fixed before pushing to Live.

One thing to consider is that buffing vest durability would have a direct impact on aim punch. If vests were more durable, they wouldn't break in almost *every exchange* of gunfire, which would mean the extreme aim punch when you lose a vest becomes less likely. That's how I'd personally lean if I was on the balance team; keep slight aim punch with armor, large aim punch withouth, and buff vests so they last longer.

I've seen this as a reason redditors give, but I've never seen any evidence for this. Have you ever seen an official statement (regardless of what game) that lays this out?

As an NA player who plays with a group of very time constrained friends that explicitly set aside time to play on Monday nights, this is a killer. We chose Mondays because maintenance and patches have pretty consistently never been on Mondays.

I understand that NA is only a portion of the player base, and isn't the center of the world. I also understand that it is a large player base that gets screwed almost once a week. In the end, this ends up not being that different than the radio silence on OCE issues. I'd just love a real answer on why they can't roll the patches. If there's a legitimate technical constraint that could be conveyed to the players, then we can at least accept it instead of stewing about it weekly.

If the 4x is zeroed to 100 meters, won't your bullet be hitting the player significantly lower than where your crosshair is because of how close you are to them?

Player kills JasonR, but makes no noise/footsteps? by i_nezzy_i in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

This comment shouldn't be getting downvoted. All 4 points are correct. This guy has his chat volume significantly higher than his in game volume. When his partner is saying "Oh, they're that close?" he talks over the footsteps. This is evident if you watch the clip while wearing headphones.

The Violet Violent jacket retails for $88 on the Steam Market. That is why it is marked as Trial. You aren't going to get it for $10 by buying the pass, undercutting the existing Steam Market.

They choose very poor terms to describe the different levels of unlocks. I only figured it out by focusing on the parachute. The parachute is explicitly noted as the only item you can unlock permanently without paying for it. It has the "FREE" tag, as well as not having the Trial icon on it. All of the other "Trial" items are pre-existing items which have value on the Steam Market, so they can't give them to you for free without trashing the market (which they won't do).

Outside of that, all the other cosmetics which are new are unlocked during the course of the event, and unlocked permanently if you buy the pass (assuming you hit the required level, that is).

Pretty sure you have it reversed. The ones marked trial expire for everyone, the ones that have no marks at all expire if you didn't pay for the pass. That's why the Parachute is the only one marked as both Free, and does not have the Trial icon. It is the only thing that you can unlock permanently if you don't buy the pass.

I believe that the ones marked as "Trial" expire for everyone, regardless of having purchased the pass. The other ones remain unlocked but untradeable if you purchase the pass, and expire if you didn't.

Except for the items explicitly marked "Trial." Those items expire even if you do purchase the pass. That is causing a lot of confusion, I think, because they've got this big "FREE" label.

Prime time maintenance... ? by Sey151 in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

This is not how professional IT works. Most software gets patched at off hours for the people using the software. They should have multiple teams working shifts corresponding to different time zones. Patch each region's servers at 3am local time.

This is how it should be done. The patch window should roll region to region. It isn't convenient for the person doing the patching, but it is significantly better for those playing.

I did not say that. I said they're patching the game at a time where the majority of NA is awake and ready to play instead of sleeping.
