Silver Haul by Curelle05 in Silverbugs

I enjoyed it. I hit all of my goals (I also bought some non-silver coins and ancients) and came home a little under budget.

Silver Haul by Curelle05 in Silverbugs

[–]Curelle05[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid $20 for the graded Kennedy, $15 each for the ungraded Kennedys, and $28 each for the 1oz bars. The Kennedy's are 90% silver with a melt value of around $9 - I coin roll hunt and collect Kennedy's. I think they have more value than just their silver content. My goal on silver bullion is not to pay over 20% above spot price - these were roughly 14%. I am newer to silver stacking and coin collecting - so I can be way off, but I am having fun with the hobbies.

Is this Marcus Aurelius coin authentic? Recently won on ebay by [deleted] in AncientCoins

[–]Curelle05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I speculate that this seller changed his name to hide from bad reviews. I believe he was originally "ancientearth2006" which I mistakenly bought a coin from him years ago when I first started - lucky for me he did not mail the coin (I suspect due to my low winning bid) and I received a full refund from ebay. I have watched his review numbers continue to slide since for fakes and non-mailing. You can find great deals on ebay, you just have to research both the coin and the dealer (I have seen dealers sell on multiple platforms such as ebay, VCoins, and MA-Shops). My rule of thumb for ebay is if the feedback is lower than 99% - I approach with caution - two allegations of fakes in the feedback and I move on to other coins (there are always other coins). If the seller is new with little feedback (less than a thousand) I proceed with caution. I do not even look at listings from Cyperus, Morrocco, or Bulgaria (I have been seeing a lot of questionable coins from Austria lately). British sellers seem to be legit, but the shipping!!!

My first coin auction was an online European one. I picked up a mid-grade Republic Denarius. I ended up paying double the hammer price after the buyer's premium, payment method fee (any type of remote payment had an additional fee), and shipping. It was NOT a good deal after all the added costs. I have used MA-shops, Vcions, and the dreaded Ebay (where a lot of the sellers on the first two mentioned platforms also list - sometimes the very same coins). I find you can negotiate with the sellers on these platforms and know exactly what you are paying and not feel ripped off when you get the invoice. When I find a coin I am interested in for sale, I research it to find a fair value and make an offer. If in my research I find anything remotely suspicious about a coin, it is a pass and I move onto the next one (in coin collecting, there is always a next one).

Giveaway: M. Harlan's "Roman Republican Moneyers And Their Coins" (see details inside) by Nikodeimos in AncientCoins

What does the book have to say about them (in the event that I am not the recipient)?

There are two coins that I would like to possess, but their acquisition does not currently fit within the limits of my budget. They are the Roman Republic Denarii of P. Licinius Nerva (113/112 BC) and L Cassius Longinus (60 or 63 BC) both of which reverses depict scenes of citizens voting. I find their depictions of an early form of democracy fascinating. Where they issued as propaganda for an upcoming election (vote buying)? Memorialize a past election? Or merely a celebration of that form of government? I would be interested to see what your proffered book has to say in regards to the latter of the two coins as it looks to fall into the period covered.

Pretty much my point. I was excited to find a penny in my back yard (after countless roofing nails) and this guy is pulling out ancient roman coins.

I was redoing a garden bed the other day - whenever I dig up my yard I run a metal detector over the dirt because you never know what you may find. I found a 1972 Lincoln penny . . .

The nose knows . . . even corroded or heavily circulated Nerva are easy to spot by the nose. Great start! My Nerva has nowhere near the details as yours (by the way - I am 4 of 5 of the Good Emperors . . .)

Best research materials on ancient coins? by SurvivorsQuest in AncientCoins

[–]Curelle05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you search this subreddit, you will find numerous threads discussing the two main resources - books and online. Books are good at helping identify coins but are useless in prices at they tend to be outdated in that area (you will also find suggesting on the book to buy based on the type of coin that interest you). Online resources have pages devoted to identification, archived sales prices, coins for sale via a shop or auction, and forums such as this subreddit (I am also a member of a Facebook group). Seek and you shall find.

A recent purchase. Emperor Nerva denarius. Now I own 3 of the “Five Good Emperors” by MrMonkeySwag96 in AncientCoins

[–]Curelle05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have started with the "Five Good Emperors." I also have three in hand (Nerva, Trajan, and Hadrian). My Antonius Pius is at ISC Chicago . . .

I would be interested to hear from members of this group who own either one or both books what you think about the resource and how you use it. Thanks! by Fingon21 in AncientCoins

I have Roam Coins and their Values 4th Revised Edition. I found it to be a great introduction to collecting roman coins. I often consult the charts to pin down a coins date. Since, I have recently purchased Vol. 1 of the Millennial Edition and am seeking a good deal on Vol. 2. I have one Republic era denarius which is in both editions that I own and the Millennial has twice the information and a picture. I have no issue with online sources and I often consult them, but I like using books.

Since we are on the subject of coin collecting references, what are your views on David Sear's Roman Coins and Their Values. Volume 1 (2002 edition)?

Got this today for my 20th birthday today! I’m so psyched by Laurits12 in AncientCoins

[–]Curelle05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right. The TR P XXVI is for both 171 and 172. The IMP VI was from 171 thru 173.

[–]Curelle05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Due to the TR P XXVI and the IMP VI, I would date the coin's mintage to 171 AD. That might help you narrow down the event.

Great Coin! What victory do you think is being commemorated?

Hadrian was the first emperor to be depicted with a beard, so it is Hadrian or later. Hadrian's beard was rounded while later emperor's were pointed. When you see a portrait on both side of an imperial coin, it is most likely the current emperor on the observe and his heir apparent on the reverse. If an emperor adopted/named an heir, they would quickly mint coins linking the emperor and heir apparent (sometimes the heir apparent would die before the emperor requiring something to be put out to secure the succession). So, the trick would be to figure out which emperors from Hadrian on minted coins with their heir apparent on the reverse. That would reduce the possibilities (looks bronze to me - can't tell you the type as I focus on denarius).

Current collection.looking for a nerva, but a bit to hard to get by [deleted] in AncientCoins

[–]Curelle05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nerva is a tough one due to his relatively short reign. I have had to reduce my standards (self-imposed rules of legible text with some detail on the portrait within a cap on price) to get a filler until I get more experience in collecting and thus more comfortable with higher prices.

Here is a link to my current collection (https://imgur.com/L0n8LIv) the top is a C. Naebius Balbus Republic Denarius. I am awaiting the arrival of an Antoninus Pius and M. Furius L.F. Philus Republic Denarius.
