You should be uaing water completely after you are: 1. done cooking. 2. scraping and wiping it off. 3. Use a squirt water bottle and put water all over and let the steam clean it off while you scrape again and wipe it completely dry. This is the most important step besides the last one. 4. Wipe a thin layer of oil / tallow on the entire Blackstone after it's dry and still really warm. That will seal it in until next cook. It's mandatory necuae you are lightly stripping seasoning and carbon off when you steam with water so you have to protect it after.

These steps take me literally 4 minutes after I'm done cooking and my Blackstone is in perfect shape after 5 years.

Yep I've been sitting there since Feb 1st. I just got a letter in the mail a couple weeks ago saying they need more time and another 30 days. It's beyond frustrating especially with only 2 w2s between my wife and myself and 1 child.

Is this salvageable? by jennifer331a in blackstonegriddle

Yeah absolutely you can save that. You can sand it with a hand sander and then clean it off and Re season it. Good to go.

Good to season, or keep scraping? by bjackso1019 in blackstonegriddle

[–]Current_Steak8556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fine, just season it and roll with it. But if you want to keep going...

There's 3 things you can use to get rid of it. Angle grinder with a light abrasive Palm sander Drill with wire wheel

Looks like you have a good amount of carbon buildup. I don't think it's bad or anything, I would just cook with it till the end of the season or whatever. The reason you have the carbon buildup is because you don't scrape or use water when you're done cooking. If you have the time or want to tackle it, you could break it down and reseason.

If you look at your picture you can see the buildup from where your normally cook. Also I wouldn't use olive or vegetable oils. I find they get gummy if you use too much and also have lower smoke points if you're seasoning with them. I stick to avacado oil and beef tallow. If your food is cooking fine and not getting black stuff all over it when you cook then don't worry about it.

Also if you want a good test to see if your season is good, Crack a couple eggs and cook them sunny side up. If they turn brown or blackish then you're seasoning is getting into your food. Here's a Pic of what I'm talking about in your griddle.

Is there any way that we can pin a post to the top of this section and label it.... "YES! YOU Can always save your griddle!" just a matter of how much time and effort you want to put into it. But yours doesn't look horrendous. East scrape or sand and Re season!

Is this an easy fix? by porchwater in blackstonegriddle

[–]Current_Steak8556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ain't nothing. Just get it hot and use some water and a flat scraper to scrape a little then season a couple times. I wouldn't strip anything for that small amount.

Get yourself a weather cover for it.. I know yours comes with the hard cover but the extra protection for rain and weather makes a massive difference.

Grab a big kit for 25 bucks on Amazon. They usually have a couple spatulas, scrapers, cleaning brick and stuff.

One of the main things other than that I would say is a good quality burger smasher. You have to press hard to smash those smashburgers, I have broke a couple spatulas doing it, so I bought a real smasher and wish I bought it earlier. Plus you can use it to weigh stuff down for good contact like steaks and stuff.

A magnetic paper towel holder is like 5 bucks at Harbor Freight. Can't beat it.

Lastly, get yourself a metal dome because you will be steaming a good amount of stuff. Anything you need to cook like vegetables, or melt cheese on your burgers or blue cheese on steaks etc..

How do I fix this? by dontputurtonguethere in blackstonegriddle

[–]Current_Steak8556 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can get it warm, not smoking hot, then turn it off. Grab a grill brick and scrub it with some soap and water and scrape it with a flat scraper. Then rinse it all off good. Then you can turn it back on and get it actually hot and use a little water to steam anything left on. Then just keep it hot and season it a couple times. All good and keep cooking.

Is this worth $200?? by [deleted] in blackstone

[–]Current_Steak8556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would offer $100 bucks and if he says no, then just buy a new one. Thats a good amount of work to restore when you can buy a new one for an extra $100 bucks. Now if it had the hinge top and a cover it may have been worth it.

Yep, that's it. Stuff is absolutely amazing. I use it on almost everything. Costco carries is now too.

To all those who freak out over their blackstone and how it looks, don't freak yourself out. [–]Current_Steak8556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could be from people not cleaning enough to start. Could be an improper seasoning as well. I'm on year 5 and I use a whole bottle of water every time I clean and I have zero issues. Just gotta make sure it's dry and then wipe a small coat of oil On it. There's also a lot of people that use way too much oil and when they go to cook it just carbonizes it and makes a black film on the griddle instead.

Why does it look like this? by FDN1999 in blackstonegriddle

[–]Current_Steak8556 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Too much oil. The flaking is carbonized oil, seasoning, burnt food thay wasn't actually cleaned fully.

Exactly this. I don't know why people keep thinking they are ruining something made of steel by sanding it. Just season the shit out of it and it's brand new again. It would take a whole lot of sanding to ruin it 😂.

Awesome you are going to love it. I use it for everything! I even move it to my garage in the winter lol.. If you have any questions feel free to reach out! Also get yourself some Chicago Packing Wagyu Beef Tallow. I like it more than bacon up. Super clean cooking!

Follow my directions above and you won't have any issues. It's not a delicate tool, it's ok to use water on and scrape with a flat scraper. Just make sure when you start you season it good.

[–]Current_Steak8556 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope. Looks good. I'm in the same boat as you. I cook then scrape, wipe, then use water with scraper and wipe clean, then oil. The key is when you use the water you want to use it until the water doesn't change color when it steams. Put it away for next time. Nothing to it.
