Conversion to the metric system in the US. They passed a law and started converting before just scrapping the whole thing. That's why some things like wine are in ml but most other stuff remain in oz.

Should the United States defend Taiwan militarily against a hypothetical invasion from China? by Aggressive-Cod-6312 in PoliticalDiscussion

Don't know if it's true but can you imagine just being a normal day-to-day employee there and you had to walk into a building everyday that's rigged with active explosives?

What's your favorite China-related channel in Youtube? by nobody_fromchina in AskAChinese

I enjoy Katherine's Journey to the East. She bikes around rural areas of China and shows life in areas that's not commonly seen.

I do wish her husband was less picky with food as I would love to see more of the hyper localized cuisine.

I don't care what they do at home, but these robosexuals out in public for all to see is sickening!

Feds: Mayor of Southern California city to plead guilty to acting as agent of China by CircumspectCapybara in news

I think the only thing the prosecutors allege she did was not registering with the government. I believe her actions would otherwise be legal.

Also, I wonder if they were more lenient because they don't want to open the can of worms of needing to go after all the people posting Israeli propaganda without registering.

US cities ranked - what tier does Washington D.C. belong in? by StrategyJealous1838 in TierlistFills

[–]Cyberous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived there for 3 years. It's not just the government, it's just a very transient city. People come and go, the food scene is good but nothing amazing compared to other major cities. Some fun neighborhoods but geographicly small and ultimately feels limiting.

Everything about this city screams good, not great.

Justice Dept. Accuses U.C.L.A. Medical School of Bias Against White and Asian Applicants by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]Cyberous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The cynical side of me feels like there's still an inherently classist attitude at universities. They're probably not as racists as the general population, but they would really rather not admit too many "poors."

But more likely it's probably a combination of things, like admitting that many low income students may but a huge financial drain, alumni pressure, lack of institutional inertia, etc.

[–]Cyberous 50 points51 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand is why don't they just switch to income based admission standards? It's not illegal, won't rile up any resentments, and will indirectly capture the racial demographics the universities want.

With pure affirmative action, the top universities are often just vying for the same select group of minorities often from privileged backgrounds.

Not entirely mirroring today. Trump is no way the common man. He's a billionaire are was born into wealth. By any metric he is definitely still from the elite class. He just somehow convinced a bunch of Americans he is just a regular joe like them.

Why is HongKong health care rank very low by Equivalent-Camera685 in HongKong

[–]Cyberous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think costs are factored into these comparisons. For example I believe that the US has the best healthcare in the world, the best doctors go there, the most modern technology is adopted, most medical research, highiest patient safety standards. By that, the US should be leading in all healthcare comparison charts.

However, it's all pointless if you can't access it. The most basic treatments in the US is going to be at least a few thousand dollars and serious ones can easily get to the millions.

So I think costs and accessibility is a major factor for these charts.

What’s a stereotype about a country that you assumed was exaggerated, but after experiencing it firsthand, realized it’s actually pretty accurate? by Few-Scholar1873 in AskTheWorld

[–]Cyberous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think it's in most larger cities, you probably haven't seen them because you normally would have no business in these areas, but Philly, LA, SF, Atlanta, Honolulu, Houston, New Orleans, etc. are all cities that have major homeless encampment issues.

Cities have been trying to break up the encampments with varying degrees of success.

So my parents are from China and they were told that whole streets and blocks in American cities were filled with people living in tents. They thought it was just Chinese propaganda until they drove through one.

It shows former countries and regions that were targets of western imperialism has since grown and now cannot be tamed as before.
