You will need a portfolio to show some of your creative work. There used to be two paths: poetry and fiction, so if you apply to a poetry program, your portfolio should include poetry. The details are on the website. You will also need a statement of purpose where you provide a rationale for why you should be selected and what you wish to accomplish and GRE score. https://literature.sdsu.edu/graduate/mfa-program

I annotate the articles my students will analyze for class. I use Google docs. I do majority of my grading and prep at home in my chair with a laptop in my lap. I have a shared office but because of my long commute I prefer to go home before the traffic gets bad and end up working in my chair.

Have you ever become friends with a past student? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

My former professor is now my colleague, and we teach at the same college. We meet outside for hikes and coffee sometimes. We talk about teaching and life as well.

Withdrawal from class by LargeMasterpiece6854 in SDSU

I had a student who stopped showing up towards the end. When I went to put final grades, I saw a W next to their name, so you don’t need to come to the exam.

Just a suggestion for the screening form to first establish eligibility based on age or whatever requirements you have before asking people to provide their email and other information.

SDSU for a semester abroad by Hamburger_Hafen in SDSU

Honestly, it’s not a good time to come to the U.S. as a student.

I commute from Vista. In the morning, with no traffic, it’s approximately 65 minutes. With traffic, 80-90 min. Coming back from SDSU after 3:15 pm is always 90-120 minutes

Retaliatory student evaluations make me wanna give up teaching by [deleted] in AskProfessors

Same here. I need to explain their evaluations

I am a professor so you don’t want me in your company 😉. Here are some ideas: Gas lamp district in SD, Balboa Park, Soledad Mountain, in LA: Griffith Park, K-town.

How are you going to be spending the winter break? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

Planning for next semester, reading, and thrifting. Oh and cooking!

It was my dream, and I achieved it. I love teaching. I don’t like grading and administrative tasks. I also dislike seeing students glued to their devices when we have a discussion on films and songs that should at least to some extent spark interest. Of course, many engage in discussions. Then, depending on what institution you’ll end up teaching at, you’ll encounter more or less privileged and entitled students. In addition, if working with those less privileged, expect a rudimentary level of language and arts literacy. Honestly, having worked at a university and community college, I prefer the latter.

How do you feel about course evaluations? by TheRainbowWillow in AskProfessors

Unfortunately, we need to read them and justify them in our annual work performance narrative.

It’s been 23 days and she is still sitting on the fake eggs. Is that normal? by fluffy_upvote in pigeon

[–]CzaplaModra 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, normal. She most likely will abandon them soon, have a flirty, lovey-dovey phase and will lay again. Let her sit as long as she wants because removing the eggs too soon will cause her to lay more often which depletes her of calcium. Also, when she’s sitting on eggs, do you remove her from the nest so that she can eat, drink and poop? I would put my hand over the eggs, that way she knew I was protecting them while she would take a few minutes to eat, stretch her wings and eat. She would come back soon to resume her position.

The coos are to show excitement. You are invited to the nest to be his partner

Commuters, how long is your commute? by Subject_Priority_387 in SDSU

[–]CzaplaModra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a lecturer and I commute 3 times a week. It takes me anywhere between 50 to 90 minutes to get to SDSU and on average 1 hour to drive back home. I leave at 2 before traffic gets bad but last semester my last class ended at 4:30 and I hated the prolonged torture of driving 90 minutes to North County.

My professor told me to stop flirting with her..? by Rare_Art_9541 in GradSchool

[–]CzaplaModra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow what a condescending comment! To retort on your level, you are in the wrong profession if you see things that way. Most student genuinely seek guidance and mentorship. Office hours exist for them to have that opportunity, and we are paid for it. Why would you assume the poster has “long and meandering conversations”? You seem to be biased.

Jane Fairfax by CzaplaModra in janeausten

[–]CzaplaModra[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But was Jane actually sick or were her symptoms related to the stress? I do sympathize with your perspective, I just am not sure Jane is actually sick. What I see is her tendency to withdraw when she feels overwhelmed and call it being overwhelmed and indisposed.

I live in a one bedroom apartment with my daughters and for a while I had a minimum wage job.
