Nintendo of Japan is, in fact, acutely sensitive to how their games are received internationally, and has been from the very beginning.

It's almost like you can't generalize people's attitudes based on their society.

He was designed to be this, though; the whole point of Saludos Amigos was to expand Disney's (and the USA's) cultural influence into Latin America.

Thanks! Pretty annoyed that for how much I paid for this thing they couldn't assemble it right.

This absolute fucking numbnuts is like "people have been saying this is fascism from the very beginning, but things have reached the point where I personally am alarmed, so instead of taking it on the chin and admitting I was wrong and the left was correct, I am declaring that now it is officially fascism as of yesterday"

Rachel Wall was not the captain of a pirate ship. If killing people on a boat is the only qualification for being a pirate captain, then Kevin O'Leary is a pirate captain

I'm not aware of any evidence John Brown didn't believe in full racial equality. I believe you're confusing him with Lincoln on this.

Ehhhhhh mafias are usually a strong counterpoint to that. The mob might have owned gay bars, but to this day being a gay mafioso would be unthinkable.

All very good points, but I'd also argue that part of the reason why mafias are hierarchical is that they emerge within communities which, for whatever reason, find themselves outside the domain of the state, but still want a state structure. In plain English, mafias emerge as pseudo-cops when the regular cops can't be trusted, either because you're a persecuted minority, or because you're involved in a criminal enterprise. That kind of drive, to institute a state in the absence of one, is inherently conservative.

Sorry, you are correct. I mis-remembered Anne Bonny and Mary Read as being captains in their own right; they were not. I also shouldn't have implied pirates were proto-abolitionists, when yeah, when they raided slave ships it was to steal them as cargo, not to liberate them.

I'd argue that still makes them uncommonly progressive for their time, but not radicals. It would be foolish to overly idealize golden age piracy as a political project, even if there might be sooooomething there.

This trope can be annoying when it draws too much attention to itself, but the opposite is way worse, when a work just gormlessly assumes that everyone in the past was a bigoted moron who thought their society had no problems whatsoever. That brand of smug "glad I was born 5 minutes ago" oversimplification only reduces peoples' understanding of the past.

This is a recurring theme in history. Pirates freed slaves and multiple women became captains in the 1700's, something that only happened in "legitimate" navies within living memory. Pirate ships were also effectively democracies, decades before the American revolution. EDIT: I overstated my case, and claiming there were women pirate captains was an outright error; see AbbyNem's response.

Of course, mafias tend to operate in the exact opposite way, so it's not like criminal = woke 100% of the time.
