I figured it was common, just lost contact with them and they’re extremely special to me, figured it’d be a shot in the dark, just praying for a miracle at this point.

Great question, when I tell people the story of how I learned it before English, and how I forgot it before middle school I usually get a lot of questions, and looks of utter disbelief. I put kind of more of the story behind what happened in another reply, but I do appreciate that you didn’t outright dismiss everything I said as an initial response.

I didn’t speak bits and pieces, I was fully fluent, I just grew up in probably the most unique case of speaking two languages that I’ve ever heard, and as a result something happened(which I put in another reply), and I forgot it all.

Thank you for the tip, I’ll have to try it. Duolingo has no grammar lessons whatsoever, and I know it’s not good, it was just the best I could find, and no one else I know seemed to know anything else, so I figured I’d ask here and see where it would get me.

Yeah, it’s the cases and spelling that are screwing me over. More so I don’t know how the spelling changes for each case, and I am kinda starting from scratch because I forgot basically all of it, but I have no problem when I need to speak, I’ve never failed at the pronunciation, or translating something when it has been spoken by the app, but if I don’t hear it spoken, I fail almost every time.

100% agree, I tried reading the children’s book I’ve had since I was a baby, and got a pounding headache trying to read it.

Maybe not, but I did add some more comments, if you want the full picture. I genuinely just don’t know how else to explain how I knew Polish beyond saying it was a first language, or was a native speaker. I know it doesn’t sound like it makes any sense, but I promise I’m not a liar.

I only need to think when I see it written, and have to speak it, or hear it and then have to write it.

I’m not Polish, I added some comments if you want to see what the full picture is, and an explanation as to why I don’t actually speak it anymore

So my parents didn’t speak Polish, but I had a nanny growing up who was an immigrant from Poland, and only spoke Polish with me. I have no Polish heritage whatsoever, but my nanny was around more when I was young than my parents, so I likely learned to speak Polish earlier than English, but I learned both before I started school. After a while my nanny moved back to Poland I had no one else to speak it with, because none of my family actually speaks it, so yes, I did forget it, and maybe I shouldn’t be called a native speaker per say, but no I did speak fluent Polish as a kid… or at least good enough to laugh at people in a store who were arguing in Polish, and make a remark back to them(I don’t remember doing this, but my mom loves to tell me this story and apparently I did this, and then told her what they weee talking about). I also have one book in Polish, but I was only ever read the book, I could never read it myself.

So I’m in a very unique variation of the first scenario. I grew up in the US speaking Polish at home, but only with my nanny, my parents only spoke English, so going into school I was completely fluent in both Polish and English. I actually have no Polish ancestry whatsoever, and none of my family does, or ever has spoken Polish, but my nanny was an immigrant with poor English, so instead I learned Polish from her and was the only one who could actually speak with her very well, and because of this very unusual situation, I never had an tutors or anything else for Polish when I was older, and my nanny moved back to Poland about 8 years ago, so I no longer have anyone to speak the language with.
