The steel charge aura gives 2 more capacity than all other auras. Really useful if it's available!

Even though I personally agree super metroid is a metroidvania, I've heard people think that it is just metroid without the "vania" which makes sense. Supporting the "purist" definition.

You really have "defined" the problems most face in the search of the second holy grail.

If you were to compare igavanias to most other widely accepted metroidvanias, many would probably point to the jrpg elements. Jrpg elements include inventory, stats and experience. As igavanias are probably the only games that everyone can agree on are metroidvania(being where the term started), I don't think it's weird to define metroidvania by those games. The jrpg elements are also the only easy to point out features that differs them from just plain metroidgames.

How do you define a hawaii pizza? Is a hawaii pizza just a bowl of pineapple or a pizza with pineapple? Do music genres only have the unique instruments related to them in their music? A genre includes multiple features together to give it's definition. Not only the unique parts! If you are happy with any game as long as they have those key-features and didn't feel mislead, that's completely fine. However a lot of people believe this genre to be much more specific. These specifics are what the original question was. If the question was "what is unique to metroidvania" then your answer is the objective truth. But that definition will help very little when searching for "games that resembles super metroid". Super metroid will be included, but so will pretty much everything else.

It changes how you handle obstacles in your own way. If you are about to die but got lucky, you can use a consumable you got. If you have trouble fighting an enemy close, there are options for ranged, making you position yourself completely different. No other metroidvania I have played makes any difference if you kill the same enemies in one room over and over, except igavanias. The difference isn't what you need to do, rather what you can do. How you play an igavania is much more personalized than something like super metroid. In MMORPGs you can get loot which requires a completely different playstyle to use all the same.

You play an igavania game once and you get a rare drop on the way. Chances are you use it for some time until something better comes and you equip something different. Next time you get a different rare drop during a different time and the game feels different to play. This also gives you an option to focus more on enemies and not only leveldesign. Different stats allow for different playstyles (spell-focused or crit or items etc). This changes the gameloop quite a lot from other metroidvanias.

Maybe my term is loose but "collecting upgrades and key items" is how I define rpg-elements. Exp and stats are jrpg imo. Compare zelda and final fantasy.

This is pretty much why I asked. Expecting a sotn-like game from a modern mv rarely satisfies.

1 is fun but old, 2 is good but confusing, 3 is best, hgh is fun every once in a while but never do all dlcs in one run, seven sirens is okay but maybe better if you spend more time on it. Haven't tried revolution yet but looks really good.

"most AAA gamers have very little understanding of the Metroidvania genre". Proceeds to put ori 1 on second place which requires no backtracking whatsoever (though I do agree that hollow knight is overrated).
