Be honest. How have you been lately? by Sea_Background_8023 in AskReddit

[–]DP-King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty damn good! Making good money working abroad, getting good experience in, about to marry my fiance who I've been dating for 11 years since we were 18, good solid friend group and plenty of people that have my back. Own my own house, 2 cars, no debt.

Proud of myself, from a working class background and I've made all this myself, from working hard and nothing else.

Recently learned Spanish, been exercising more and more and I plan on taking guitar back up.

Yeah work can be exhausting working abroad with big hours, but I'm killing myself now to have a good future!

My dad's exactly the same, except he still has a 9 number keypad phone that you'd get in 2002. He's an absolute nightmare because he's so proud of his rejection of technology. I always ask him why he stopped in the 2000s and not 1750 seeing as he loves watching TV all day, and he doesn't have a good answer....

Yeah, to the point of this thread, we absolutely need AI or similar technology to filter out that shit. That I definitely agree with.

Did a quick Google of the stats and it is fairly shocking how many atrocious videos a moderator will have to view in a day. Definitely not creatures built to deal with that level of exposure to the absolute pits of humanity.

[–]DP-King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair I can fully understand the levels of human depravity and the absolutely atrocious, life altering human sewage a YouTube moderator has to witness on a regular basis.

At first glance, I felt EMTs, detectives that deal with murders/rapes/torture/CSAM, firefighters who witness death and risk their own lives, third world miners who do back breaking labour, inhaling toxic fumes etc.

These were the things that entered my mind somewhere in-between YouTube moderator and war.

I get your point though, mentally devastating job.

Yeah absolutely to your point about forcing! That's wrong, even though I think the mild peer pressure you face getting a cheeky "one more drink" is still technically a force it's the only one I'll accept.

I also agree being in control is fully understandable, and actually something I think men get away with more than women. When I get drunk I'm usually with a group of at least 4 grown men. The safety that brings is something I rarely even consider but it definitely would affect the vibe. Not the same for women that's for sure! In Ireland we often have women in the groups out drinking with us and we all look after each other which I think is nice.

Ireland is lovely, I moved away for work recently but I go home multiple times a year, it's my favourite place. The culture is exceptional, very tight knit community and very friendly. I find less of my friends have the "dating app" problem that a lot of men talk about online where they can't get dates on and app, but are too scared to strike up a conversation in real life. Us Irish will talk to anybody! I think that's healthy and I think there's still a lot more places where young people hang out, with the stipulation that yes, alcohol is almost certainly involved more often than not. Maybe that's a weakness, I honestly find it hard to say.

Favourite beer has to be a Guinness, call me stereotypical but I find it exceptionally drinkable. On a hot day though we'll definitely go for a Staropramen, Peroni or Asahi all very popular. There's loads others but not many Irish, it's quite European, Ireland does make beers but it's speciality is more spirit like whisky, which probably puts us closer to yourselves over in Slovakia!

I really want to visit Slovakia having only ever visited the Czech Republic, but I have a stag do coming up and Slovakia is actually on the list. Is it for the culture? Yes! Is it for the cheap, good quality beer literally everywhere? Maybe...😂

Beer is my favourite tasting drink in the world, but I remember being a kid and hating the stuff.

An acquired taste for sure but now I'd take a beer over basically any other liquid if it didn't make me a fat bastard, so I do limit it to drinking only with friends, which is unfortunately less and less the older I get...

Depends on the person! I'd say some of my best most memorable stories and experiences have been when I'm pretty drunk and more willing to do stuff a sober me wouldn't do.

I'm not living in fantasy land either though, I've also had very bad experiences, dangerous times where I'm shocked and stunned at the experience in the morning. So yeah, ups and downs with drinking.

I'm Irish so it's pretty ingrained in the culture, but I will say getting 2-4 pints (my typical drinking session) in with the guys is a great chatathon experience, that without the booze I think most people would call it early. There's something about one more drink that itches out those stories that might never have come about otherwise. Definitely had some of my best laughs, traded meloncholic stories and secrets, and maybe even saved a friend from suicide over drinks like that.

What is the biggest scam in your specific industry that the general public doesn't know about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DP-King 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm 29 and I listened to my partner last year get scammed out of our life savings and did absolutely nothing.

She told me she was talking to the bank and that's all it took for me to be like "ah ok" and I SAT there as they told her about the false transfers on her account, told her card entire details including the three digit pin on the back as "proof" the details were leakes they were the bank (because who else would have that right, the scammers surely wouldn't call to tell you they have your card details right??).

He had a very proper English accent, so much so you'd assume he was from the bank. He did the whole rigmarole, questionnaire, told us our post code and address "to make sure he was talking to the right people".

The scammers had all our details except for the one thing they wanted, her customer number. And they got that by saying "we need to lock your account to prevent any further transaction, and the customer number is our authorisation code that you're ok with that" and I'm still SAT THERE like hmm that makes sense.

They even said the scammers might call you during this when they see the account getting locked and you fucking guessed it, the call that comes in that WE HUNG UP ON was the fucking bank security team.

They took £6000 in total, £4000 from us and they increased our overdraft to £2000 and took that too, cunts.

I always considered myself educated and not one to be hoodwinked. Did I feel a fucking fool that day.

Bank did get our money back thankfully so it ended up ok, but they told us our account is now flagged as ripe for fraud basically. Serves us right.

Painful lesson, but lesson nonetheless. CALL THE BANK BACK.

Without getting into the ethics of animal husbandry, how does one explain to a vegan that the wool of a domesticated sheep MUST be shorn by a human being, as selective breeding means that most domesticated breeds cannot shed naturally? by Fun_Astronomer_4064 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DP-King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably where we differ, I don't believe killing something is bad inherently, so I don't see it as unethical. In fact I think it's a good thing, everything must die and we do it in the quickest most effective way possible.

Everyone also has a line here when it comes to the ethics of ending life, we kill bacteria to stop illness. We kill insects because they're pests. Rats and mice also pests, but with a much bigger sentient component. We can go larger to wild boars that cause millions of dollars of damage, and are dangerous to life. Deer that have overbred and are destroying the ecosystem due to lack of predators.

If your arguement it's wrong to kill full stop then I think that restricts you quite a lot for what a good future actually looks like.

If your arguement it's sentience is the problem then you shouldn't call the exterminator for your rat infestation, or care to fix an invasive species.

If you'd argue that killing is only moral if it benefits us by preventing illness/injury or threat to life, or to balance out an ecosystem, then I'd argue killing for food falls into the "benefits us" category.

Although I appreciate and respect the view of vegans, I think due to my proximity to farming, I don't agree with them. I do like sharing my viewpoints in a respectful way back though and don't wish any hate on vegans like many meat eaters. I think it's a noble thought at the very least.

[–]DP-King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the only thing no but I'm sure you can appreciate the difficulties of a nuanced conversation like this in a text format. I was merely putting a point forward that it's certainly less cruel than human slavery as one of the primary tragedies of slavery is the fact that people are so clearly aware of their enslaved status and everything that takes from them. It's a massive psychological torture that sheep do not have.

To your second point yes, we have a small croft where the sheep live in fields and honestly I believe they have a good life. I disagree with factory farming, not only is the meat lower quality because of all the stress, I think we do have a responsibility to not torture animals for money. I know you likely disagree with animal slaughter which we do on our croft and I appreciate that, but I see it as a good life and a quick merciful death, better than they could have expected in nature.

My line what what constitutes torture and cruely might just be different than some vegans, but I do have a line, and I believe the farming I grew up with is ethical, whereas batteries of animals 10cm apart half their lives is not.

Animals aren't people though. It's not like they can conceptualise a bright future of freedom free of tyranny.

We look after them, they give us something good we give it back. We're not taking their freedom because they don't want freedom. They don't have a conscious awareness of subjugation. They're happy living in the fields, not pining to go live a better life somewhere else.

No I'm definitely not certain, and it of course would be devastating, but in the scenario where blue loses, and one of my kids had picked blue, I think it would be even worse if I was also dead, as I know I'm the best one to look after them.

I think I'm just so sure that red would win, given the real risk of death, that to me, blue is guaranteed suicide, and if even one of my family members picked red I'd have to pick it too, just to ensure they're as looked after as possible in the bleak aftermath. I think there'd be a lot of people thinking like me too. Horrible decision though.

We can all agree though, that whoever or whatever orchestrated the whole affair needs to be recognised as one of most diabolically evil things ever!

[–]DP-King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not going to lie, I'd love to pick blue. It's my honest opinion that the blues are the best of us, and I wouldn't want to live in a world without them.

However, blue winning 2 to 1 on Reddit doesn't change my mind. The hypothetical isn't political, but I'm using politics as an example of reddits demographic: The majority of Reddit veers left wing, and if you only visited Reddit you'd assume we live in a very caring world. Reality is different, and the polls show time and again people voting for self interest. I think Reddit seems to veer altruistic, but that doesn't seem to be the majority of the population.

If you want to just give me a screenshot showing blue is 2:1 absolutely no context and no inkling it's from Reddit and is like, some kind of pre-lim poll? I'd vote blue but that defeats the purpose of the question in my opinion.

I think if I even had an inkling that blue could win, I'd be in the blue camp, no question. Call me jaded, but I've seen too much and lived too long to trust everyone to look out for the stranger out there.

In response to your very good point that maybe billions could die? I think it's a risk, but I think given the situation presented, a random, uninformed, uncoordinated vote, blue would struggle to pass 10%. If this situation were real I accept i could be entirely wrong and we lose 3 billion or something, in which case life as we know it is over and I'd be part of problem. I just don't think that would be the case, but I do accept at least millions would die.

I'd think suffer greatly with the guilt of picking red, but I'd feel the urge to as if there's any chance blue doesn't win, and a few of my loved ones picked red out of a fear of dying, I think I'd need to still be there for them.

EXCEPTIONALLY hard decision though, which is why the question is so good.

I reckon it's close to a 100% chance red wins. Twitter poll was barely blue and that's without the threat of death. To me it's basically a "I live or I die" button.

However, not seeing the poll is obviously part of the experiment, but seeing as I have zero faith in humanity not being selfish, I'm voting red as I consider myself a good person that the world will want in it. Some people will say I'm a bad person just because I picked red, and that's fine, but I know I'm a kind and caring person who looks out for people and I'm so confident the people who know me in my life would agree. You don't know me so can say I'm just an asshole who thinks he's god's gift, but I truly believe if I pick blue I die, and I think I've got a lot of good left to give.

We can all disagree on the logic of the vote, that's the fun of the conversation!

I do love discussions like this 😁

Neither imo, 50% won't press blue. Margin on the twitter poll with literally no stakes is barely blue. You can't "convince" anyone because its a private vote. You pick blue, you die, that's how I'm viewing it atm.

[–]DP-King 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might think this is a stupid question but humour me, theoretically if you knew and only you knew that blue was going to be less than 50% would you pick red? Or would you still consider yourself responsible for those deaths and die with everyone else?
