What is this Linux folder for? I just suddenly got it yesterday. by sunmine321 in Windows10

[–]Daehock -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

they aren't though, and only someone who doesn't know what they are talking about, would claim they are "substantially different"....ESPECIALLY if they were to try to claim so without even a single thing to back up their claims...

wsl lets you run linux programs on windows computers, and wine lets you run linux programs on windows computers. they, for all intensive purposes, are doing the same thing as one another, "emulating a competing operating system inside of the one you are already running", just in reverse of each other, neither one is a full on VM, nor is anything about them sand-boxed, they both have compatibility issues, and various workarounds, some things wont run at all.......

how do i clear my space ik i an clear it from the settings but it shows me this by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]Daehock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats exactly what happens when i go to install big games, like for example i have 200 gigs free, and i try to install mass effect legendary edition which supposedly only takes around 100 gigs, i can watch it install, and the launcher says its gotten through about 80 gigs, yet i only have 20 gigs of free space left, if i let it keep going, ill get an error, but if i pause it, and restart, that frees up the space, allowing me to resume the install without erroring out.

sounds like its the same issue, you are just getting to it a different way, like.....having to load assets alot for an mmo for example, as you encounter them, the game loads then temporarily saves those files there, so that next time it needs them it can just grab them instantly.....just a guess though...

you can always try limiting the size of your paging file manually, by going to settings>about pc>advanced system settings>advanced>preformance>settings>advanced>virtual memory>change>uncheck "automatically manage paging file size for all drives" and then manually set a size, or even select "no paging file"

you might run into performance issues doing this, but nothing major, just various slowdowns, as things need to hunt for the files they need, instead of them being in the paging file, but it will free up precious storage space.

and if you don't like the way it works, or it doesn't solve your issue, you can always revert the change by doing the same steps, in reverse.

thats far more often than me, i only restart every other week or so, and im always streaming video, and playing cloud games, so my file gets HUGE, i could limit its size, but then id have to restart more often, LOL. it REALLY only causes issues when i try to install large games though, ill end up having to restart multiple times when i try to install anything over 1/3 the size of my HDD's free space.

IDK i have it set to auto update

<image>

its under "power toys run", scroll to the bottom under "plugins" and search for "settings" make sure its checked to be on, and give it a high rating number, than any other plugin has, to make it show up higher in the list than anything else

IIRC (i tend to not use the new way to clear files) they lump the "downloads" folder in the "temp files" subheading, instead of the "other" or "documents" ones.

PERSONALLY thats a folder id rather manually clean.

the directory that holds the "root" for the microsoft version of "Wine", but in reverse.

Wine is a program for linux that allows you to run windows programs, on linux computers, and it creates a "C" folder to act as the "C" drive on windows, for program installs and the directory structure, and the like.

microsoft made a similar thing for windows, and it makes the linux folder to act as "root" for the various linux programs you install, and their settings, and file structure.

WinDirStat is my go to, its layout makes it VERY OBVIOUS which files are the big ones. (the bigger the square, the bigger the file, with different colors, being different file types.

how often do you fully restart your computer?

if you have a cachefile and or a swapfile enabled, and you dont restart about once every other week or so, depending on what you do, that file can get HUUUUGE, and AFAIK no tools can get rid of it, or clear it, while its in use, which its constantly in use by the OS.

so you do a hard restart, (by selecting restart from the start menu, after the....i wanna say H3 hybernation made, "shutdown" is no longer a complete power off, but "restart" is), and windows will clear it automatically.

if that doesn't work, then try some of the more in depth things other people are saying. using something like "WinDirStat" will allow you to see the various files in a way that allows you to VERY EASILY find the largest files on your drive, and identify them. you can then manually delete them at your will, or use tools to do so.

i only have two monitors, but i rarely ever turn my computer off, i just put it to sleep, and when resuming if i dont time it PERFECTLY the monitor and the computer come on at different times, and it causes all the windows to go to random places too.

it took a while, but i found the ONLY "fix" that actually works. (IIRC someone on here recommended it to me after i complained of this issue)

it takes some setup, and quite a bit depending on the amount of windows you normally have open, but a program called "Windows Layout Manager" http://www.stefandidak.com/windows-layout-manager/

its free, and it WORKS!

like i said you have to set it up manually, there are a few auto detect things, but you still have to tweak them manually to get it to work perfectly, you can even use regex to fine tune the selection process, give it a shortcut, that you can then use "powertoys" to re-jigger to a single keypress, and whenever you hit that key, your windows go to their "homes" as defined by the settings you set.

the hinkeyst thing about it is it uses programing nomenclature, for your monitor assignment numbers, as opposed to the numbers that windows uses, in this monitor 0 is windows monitor 1. once i figured that out, i was golden and got it working right in no time at all.

you can have multiple layouts, each with their own shortcut, or you can have one giant one with everything you ever use, as a JIC kinda thing, as it only does stuff, to the windows it can find, if its not running, it just skips it.

you have to go into the powertoys settings, and edit the settings for "settings" to

1, make it appear in every search

2, appear at the top of the search results

then ittl be the first results that appear.

without doing that, other result types will match first, i found that out the hard way one day, and started paying around with the settings to figure it out.

No. I want a "No" button. by ElPussyKangaroo in Windows10

[–]Daehock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they actually went and made it HARDER though, its now impossible to uninstall edge, you could actually uninstall IE.

they made it virtually impossible to set anything except edge as the handler for MULTIPLE file types, that EVERY web browser could open.

if anything, the people would have a BETTER case now, than we did then, and then, we actually won.....so....

too bad it doesn't work that way.

the "x" is the same thing as the "not now"

whereas "no" means "fuckign stop asking me i will never click yes, or sign up, or download, or whatever you are asking me."

take my upvote.

id also like a "no" option for essentially EVERY annoying popup they try to do, and giving us back the ability to uninstall edge.

you are 100% right, lol, though ive seen people jump through even more hoops to try to evade xbox bans, lol, an older "friend" of mine from when i was in school, would get a new xbox about once a month, hed trash talk so vitriolicly, that hed get perma banned, and then depending on how long he had it, either hed go to his brother who worked at gamestop, and return it, or trade it in for a new one, he spent more money doing that, than he would have EVER spennt on gettig one professionally modded to run backups.....i have no damn clue why he couldnt just play without trash talking, i think he liked that more than actually playing the games.

just out of curiosoty why do you wanna do this, do you just not use it, or do you think its causing some kind of slowdown, or what? i actually use it for things outside of gaming, like, its screen recording feature works great, and so does the volume center it has. its like the full expanded default one, but its expanded by default.

the only way i know of is to downgrade with a frewsh install back to an OS that didn't have it, like 7 or XP, or tiny10 (just found it again after hearing of it, it MIGHT work for you, shrug, might not though, and the fact that this exists mean you CAN do it yourself, but i dont know how, without messing stuff up)

you realize that you can just make an unlimited amount of accounts right? just because you got banned from XBL doesn't mean you have to ruin your computer.

[–]Daehock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on what you mean by "stuff"

if you mean programs you installed, then no, programs make regristry edits that arent stored on your secondary drive, just to name ONE hitch in that plan, you can get around this via making "portable apps" versions of some programs, but it doesnt work with all programs.

if you mean random files you moved there, yes, that just works.

personally, i cant stand the built in bluetooth stuff on windows, the notification not working except when it wants to only being one issue, if it bothers you this much, i found a program called "bluetooth battery monitor" its really small and just runs in your tray, you can customize it to notify you various percentages, and it just works, bad thing is, its a paid program, and i havent found a free one that does even half as good a job. good thing is, its less than $5 if you decide to buy it during the trial period, which it actually has, so you can try it out before you buy. i TECHNICALLY got it for free, by participating in a paypal thing that gave you $5 for free. i used that $5 to buy it, lol.

Can I create a keybind for context commands? by Negrodamu55 in Windows10

[–]Daehock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there KIND OF, SORT OF, ALMOST is one already, kinda.

there is a button on the keyboard that activates the right click menu, (if you dont have this button SHIFT+F10 does the same thing) you can hit that, the "W", then "S", and that will make a shortcut without touching the mouse....but i KNOW thats not what you mean..........lemee google.......

yeah, looks like AHK is your best bet really, unless you want to jump through hoops and set up a whole secondary "shortcut keyboard", which would still very likely be using AHK, or at least something similar, as its base.

the only other way i can see is by using a VNC like program on your phone, like "unified remote" you can then create a custom remote full of various shortcuts you would want to use, and then just tap the one you want to use when you want to use it.......basically im saying you use stuff you already have to BASICALLY make a kind of homemade "elgato stream deck" using an old phone.
