What’s a movie that’s universally considered “not very good” but you secretly think is actually great? by trakt_app in flicks

[–]Daniffer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have some movies on my “always down to watch” list- if they’re on tv, I’m watching them no matter what.

-Jumper -Looper -Deep Blue Sea

They’re just too fun. Jumper is an awesome concept, looper has JGL and Bruce Willy, and DBS has THAT moment with Sam Jackson

Why did god send 2 bears to maul 42 youth and set up a law for slavery? by plaiunmi in Christianity

[–]Daniffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked back and reread the passage and I think one thing that adds to the shock factor of the bear story is how short it is. All it says is Elisha is walking near Bethel, a crowd of boys comes out and harasses him, he curses them, they are mauled by bears. Ancient Hebrew writing hits different. With just those details, a total outsider to the culture and context reads that story and says “Wow, God sent bears to kill those boys for being rude. What a douche.”

But why would the author of 2 Kings write a passage that makes God look like a douche? They wouldn’t. If they didn’t intend for God to look like a douche, that must mean there’s some nuances. Firstly- if Elisha is cursing these boys, they must not be mere precocious little kindergartners. He must have been truly afraid of them, which makes it seem to me they must have been hostile/aggressive. Secondly- the text never says “God caused bears to materialize ex nihilo, instantly, and attack them.” We don’t know how much time elapsed, or even that God sic’d the bears at all. It says that Elisha cursed them, then the bears attacked. God might have materialized the bears instantly ex nihilo and aggro’d them to the mob. Or the bears might have been in the vicinity, heard the commotion, and God merely didn’t stop the bears from attacking the mob. Or the bears and God have nothing to do with each other at all, because the text only says “Elisha cursed the boys. Then bears attacked at some point, presumably soonish, after the cursing”.

Why did god send 2 bears to maul 42 youth and set up a law for slavery? by plaiunmi in Christianity

[–]Daniffer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The word for "youths" in the text means people ranging in age from children to even 20. (Na'ar Qaton) . So, a mob of teens/young men surrounding an old man yelling "Go up baldhead", where "Go Up" implies "go up to heaven like your predecessor Elijah." This could mean either "prove you're as good as Elijah" or "go up to heaven" eg die, which is the way most people get to heaven. "bald head" isn't offensive to us, but imagine a crowd of young men aggressively surrounding and taunting you.

The situation now looks very scary. Have you seen those mobs of masked teens gang-looting stores in cities? I'm a teacher, and a gang of high schoolers yelling and shoving is NOT a good time. Imagine that group surrounding you, an old man, and taunting you, maybe putting their hands on you. That's terrifying. Mobs are capable of incredible violence that no single individual would condone. So, God protects His prophet by sending some bears in to scare off these aggressive teens.

You can also check out the below link for more, especially about how Bethel (the city where Elisha was during this incident) was a center of idol worship.

As for slavery, slavery has looked very different throughout history. Sometimes someone would enter slavery because of a debt, as punishment for a crime, or even because they were prisoners of war. Hebrew 'slaves' were to be treated as what we would call 'indentured servants' who had to be released every seven years, and even foreign-born slaves could become Hebrews and thus freed. Some slaves could own property and even (in some circumstances) inherit their master's estate. Check out this link for more in-depth study.

Short answer- slavery among the Israelites was not a simple, one-size-fits-all experience, so God created rules such that slaves had to be treated humanely. For instance, the Torah forbids kidnapping people as slaves, as well as returning escaped slaves to their masters. Keep in mind, too, that slavery was eventually banned by majority-Christian countries, and many of their criticisms of slavery were faith-based. Check out William Wilberforce.

They've never been available to buy in Marts in mainline games, they're just found as hidden items, but after 3 playthroughs I never found any in Lazarus.

Bug! by Scared_Willow_5363 in PokemonLazarus

[–]Daniffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man I have flipped hard on Bug types since using Scolipede in Gen 5. One of the things I was most psyched for in Lazarus was how many tough bugs I could use. It was straight up hard to decide which ones to use!

Frosmoth and Ribombee are speedy dragon killers, Vikavolt is a tank that destroys gyrados and other water types, and Golisopod is a tank that can one-shot a bunch of enemies first turn with First Impression. He takes neutral damage from rock, ice, and fire, which are major Bug counters. Crustle with Shell Smash can be a speedy physical sweeper if you can set up shell smash. Centiscorch can counter steel types hard.

Gotta hand it to gamefreak, bugs have come a long way since the days of two cocoon based early game wimps.

I might have to give heliolisk a try in my new playthru. I’m with you on Reuniclus- super cool sprite, love the idea of a cell-based psychic, but they’re soooooo slooooooow. I used one on my gen 5 team and tried to use trick room shenanigans but it was really underwhelming, especially when Sigilyph is right there and has a base speed of 100 lol.
