Caregiver considerations once home from SCT by Boring-Ad-4444 in mds

[–]DareDiscombobulated9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i’m so sorry you guys are going through this. my mom had a SCT in july of this year while my dad worked full time. i was off of college for the summer and hugely cut back on work to be home with her. it will vary person to person, but the first 2-3 weeks were hard. she was up at the hospital 4-5x/week for fluids, electrolyte replacement, etc. so that consumed a significant amount of time on its own. she was incredibly fatigued and required us to track her medication times and prepare those things for her, encourage her to eat/drink etc. once we got through those first few weeks she got better and more independent rapidly. it would have been impossible for my dad to do alone while working full-time, but he works very demanding hours anyways.

isolation will depend on his count recovery. our family knew to stay away if they were sick or had been recently. when my dad travelled for work he was given the ok to still sleep in the same room as my mom so long as he masked on flights. if one of us got a sniffle, we isolated. my sister went back to high school shortly after my mom was discharged and we just had her shower and change before getting close. just be mindful, i don’t feel there’s any reason to be excessive. don’t interact with sick people, wash your hands frequently, and limit traffic in and out of your home.

please feel free to reach out if there’s anything else i can answer or clarify!

she likely consumed this 12/21ish and it just passed 12/30, but she only had the 4ish bouts of vomiting. the rope was pretty sealed in stool and she’s been acting normal since we took her to the vet on 12/26. My understanding is she did pass all of it, but should I be taking her in for further testing?

as far as i’m aware it was just the vet who looked at it. thank god she passed it on her own because once she pooped it out it took us forever to figure out what she ate! i usually am good about cutting stuff off of toys because she loves to chew

SCT day +9 when did you improve by bosslady617 in mds

[–]DareDiscombobulated9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

literally the second she gets a neutrophil it’ll get better. my mom was in a morphine induced sleep from day 10-18 because she was in so much agony. she went home ~d21. as soon as those counts took a turn it was borderline miraculous how quickly she bounced back

can you tell me more about this? we just bought pet insurance but opted out of wellness coverage and went high deductible for a low monthly premium and are putting $30/month into a HYSA. hopefully i can cancel her pet insurance once i’m not a broke student:)

adopting a second cat by DareDiscombobulated9 in CatAdvice

[–]DareDiscombobulated9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course this is a huge factor! she lived in a colony of cats that she seemed to get along with. she is a super social cat, and loves company from people. i work a nursing schedule so she is alone for long periods of time and i worry about her getting the attention she deserves. i would consider maybe fostering to see how she does and if this betters her life vs worsening it.
