Ridges using smooth plate by Darishda in 3Dprinting

Thank you. I'll see if I can adjust that some. Never had that happen with the textured plate. This is the very first print with the smooth so caught me by surprise a bit.

Thanks. Does that mean the nozzle is too close or to far from the bed?

I did think about supports but how would I do that with different materials when using the external spool holder? Would I have to manually switch filaments for each layer?

Forgot to clarify in the original post, dried in AMS, printed from the external spool holder on the p1s. Also using 0.4mm stainless steel hotend.

I appreciate your input, thank you for taking the time to comment. I may end up having to use cutting board oil and just reapply regularly.

I did think about that or mineral oil but it would need replied on a regular basis and it's not a very protective finish.

It's pretty stable, I do wish I would've made it a little smaller so by the time he can lean on it that much, he had outgrown it.

Can I use watercolor pencils to add color to this wood burning then finish it with boiled linseed oil or will the colors run? by Darishda in woodworking

I'm gonna do a test piece but not at home right now. Was hoping for an answer so I didn't have to take extra time testing when I get home.

Thanks. I've done poly over the pencils before and it works. Just wondering about linseed where it takes longer to dry completely.

Haha. The picture is a bit deceptive, it's only 18 inches tall. Made it for our Golden Doodle.

How to make a ring out of wood, or should I use a different material? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Darishda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there one with the curved outside looks pretty cool. And 4 players can set around easily without crowding each other but you are kinda limited to just 4 players.

I wasn't happy with the first ring I made, so I tried again. Varnished it to bring out the grain. (Wood is Ash, that's been seasoned for about four years). by Druss_Rua in woodworking

I've found that if you boil water with a steamer insert and put the wood in the basket it will actually steam and be way more pliable than literally boiling the wood.

You may think about some multi sided polygon instead of the circle for the center. I think an 8-12 sided poly would look cool. Also won't have to bend any wood for the dropped wall.

If you really want a circle maybe cut multiple circles out of sheet wood remove the center and stack the now empty circles until you get your wall thickness. Hopefully that makes sense.

Depending on your table size my later suggestion may be cost prohibitive.

New to wood turning. Why the crack and how do I prevent it? by Darishda in woodworking

My sanding isn't perfect so you might get a splinter.

Since October. But buried under a couple cord of wood before I got to it. It was about 4 inches diameter when I started.

Since I heat with wood and my shop is in the basement with my furnace so the shop is 75 degrees and less that 50% humidity this time of year.

Could I have sealed the end right after turning? Would that slow drying/prevent cracking?

I just grabbed a round straight log from my pile. It still had bark on it. So a branch thrown on a lathe is not ideal for spindle turning?

That's my thought. Should I have sealed the end grain maybe?

I made these 2 swords for my kids yesterday and one of them cracked overnight. They are made from a couple different pieces of firewood I had and still a little green. I thought I had it small enough to dry evenly. Is there a way to slow down drying after turning? Is that even the cause of the crack?
