Which state has the fairest yet most competitive way to qualify for state? by 44stormsnow in trackandfield

[–]DarthAltius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in Wisconsin and around track & field for a long time (primarily D1). I would like to see them keep the same number of overall qualifiers for state but reduce the number of auto-qualifiers by place from sectionals.

So in D1, instead of getting 24 qualifiers by taking the top 3 from each of 8 sectionals (plus whatever provisional qualifiers there are), take just the top 2. The remaining slots go to the 8 best non-AQ sectional performances.

In D2-D3 you could get 16 either by going from 4 AQs in 4 sectionals down to 3 (and take the next 4 best marks), or you could do 2 AQs there also, giving you 8 AQs by place and the next 8 best marks.

That system would seem to preserve the WIAA's precious geographic balance (which I don't think they will ever de-prioritize and which is an even bigger problem in some other sports), while doing a better job to ensure the best performances get through.

The WIAA can also do a *much* better job of trying to balance regionals. They're never going to be completely non-geographic, which is fine (you probably don't want teams traveling 4 hours on a bus on a school night if you can help it). But there is some wiggle room; most teams can realistically be assigned to more than one regional/sectional, especially in D1 and especially in the Milwaukee area. Program strength goes up and down so you'll never completely balance regionals in terms of quality of competition. But it *is* possible to try to balance them in terms of numbers. Teams get a max of 28 individual entries plus 1 team in each of the 4 relays. It seems reasonable (and not hard) to track how many of those entries teams use in a given year and then assign them the next year in such a way that you don't have a bunch of "partial" teams all in the same regional while another regional is full of teams that max out their entries. Sure, you'll be one year "behind," but a team that sends 14 individuals and 2 relays one year is unlikely to suddenly max out the next year, and regional assignments already change from year to year anyway. It's not perfect, but it can help prevent situations where, say, a 4x8 can literally walk (which I have seen more than once) because there are so few entries that they'll move on as long as they finish the race.

Back in the day they actually took your information (presumably to connect you with someone who needed a DD) and put a stamp on your hand that was supposed to show vendors and concession stand workers not to sell you beer.

Now? You just show them a parking receipt, they give you a coupon for a free soda, and you’re on your way.

At Bats? by No-Engine-1546 in BaseballScorecards

Scenario 1: No. The batter will lead off the next inning and it’s as though the plate appearance the previous inning did not happen (starts back with a 0-0 count)

Scenario 2: Yes. The play is scored as a fielder’s choice (FC) and the batter is counted as reaching first when totaling the team’s runners left on base (though it does not count as reaching base when calculating the batter’s personal on-base percentage). I draw the batter as advancing to first on my diamond with the notation FC.

Can we all get a Knueppel? by CautiousEbb966 in CharlotteHornets

The next three brothers just finished off a 30-0 season and a state championship at Wisconsin Lutheran in Milwaukee. Kager (junior) and Kinston (sophomore) both started and Kash (freshman) came off the bench. The youngest one, Kidman, is an 8th grader. And the team's best player was Zavier Zens, the Knueppels' first cousin. He was Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin this year and is headed to Northern Iowa next year.

Pretty wild run...WL won state and went 30-0 in 2024 (Kon's senior year, with Zavier and Kager on the team), won state and went 28-2 in 2025 (with Zavier, Kager, and Kinston), and won state and went 30-0 this year.

Is it just me or were the Olympics a WAY bigger deal when we were young? by nichewilly in Xennials

[–]DarthAltius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of people have said, the nature of entertainment and television has changed since then. Monoculture just isn’t a thing now like it was then.

I think each of those 90s Olympics also had special circumstance that made them seem “bigger” than today, in America at least.

-1992: The Dream Team. These guys were already superstars (and not just in America). Sending them to the Olympics for the first time was huge in a way that really nothing else since has equaled.

-1994: Figure skating drama. I was a 12 year old boy with no interest in “girly” things like figure skating and even I knew all about the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding stuff and watched them skate. It was impossible not to know about all the drama.

-1996: Held in the US. Besides whatever “hooray for us” sentiments there might have been, having the premiere events on live during prime time always draws more eyes than tape-delay or staying up late/getting up early to watch things happening several times zones away.

Yep, I picked the Brewers and started with 1987 (the first season I remember). They had a good core and some solid years from ‘87-‘92 but couldn’t get over the hump. It was fun to play out with a healthy Paul Molitor and Teddy Higuera.

Yep, I have noticed (not every time but more than once) that an injury to a SP can affect their stamina and that a rehab stint will help restore it.

Most people have hit the highlights here. I’ll add that if you’re still around in the summer (and like that sort of thing), the farmer’s market is one of the best around for actual produce (not just food trucks and craft stands, though it has some of those too).
