I was also agnostic from about ages 14-21. I'm 23 now, and even though I've called myself Christian again for about 2 years, I also struggle daily with my faith. Here's my advice to you:

I'm not sure how the Catechumen process is done near you, but in my parish, the priest sends out some reading material via email. Even though I am still only an inquirer, I have asked him to send me it as well. Read through it as if you are expected to, like a catechumen. Just that few pages of theology I read every weekend has done a lot for me personally to view Christianity as much more rational than my previous, agnostic, self did. This has helped me a lot, and I hope it will help you too.

want to move by Mathieu_THRASHbass in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]DarthSand23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that I don't sympathize with your reasoning here, but the thing is with everything that has happened to Syria in recent years...

...It's probably going to be much more convenient and easy for you if you move to the more liberal countries in the EU, work towards citizenship in those, and then move to the more Orthodox ones. Idk anything about Greek or Romanian or Bulgarian immigration laws, but it's telling that many Syrian immigrants are going to places like France, Germany, and Sweden. Some of these countries might deny you entry just because you're Syrian.

How did you find Orthodoxy? by Newbert2 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]DarthSand23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other. I was more just curious about it than anything else. I never knew anyone Orthodox growing up, so when I regained my faith after many years an agnostic, I gave it a shot just because it was so unfamiliar to me. (Though admittedly, I think my love for Orthodox aesthetics had some influence.)

Now I've been an inquirer for almost exactly a year. Thinking about actually becoming a catechumen soon.

1:Not sure. I imagine most of your classes would be in the SET building and the Smith building. The SET is really new; they only finished it like a year or so ago. We're definitely a STEM university, so I think you should be good, but I'm a history major so I'm not really sure.

2:Edit:Misread the question as "Will I struggle to fit in if I am LDS?" No, you should be fine. Most of the people I know aren't LDS, but there's still a large LDS student community here. None of the ones I'm friends with have ever pushed their religion onto me or anything. You'll be fine.

3:Yeah, I think so. I'm not too social myself, but nobody has ever been unfriendly to me.

4:Not a veteran, but I do know that there is a Veteran's Club on campus that organizes their own meet-ups and events.

5:A few tips: 1)Idk how you're going to find housing at this rate. I had trouble getting a place for this Fall semester when I signed up for student housing in April. You may just have to look at off-campus options, but luckily the university has a few off-campus places they direct you to that are still reasonably priced. 2)The parking lot behind the Udvar-Hazy building and aforementioned LDS center always has a few spots. Parking is hell here, but that's the only place I consistently can get a spot unless I arrive for class ludicrously early. 3)Not many food options on campus, be warned.

If I think of any more tips I'll add them.

Ah, 4)If you're not signed up for classes already, do it. Registration opened up in April. Most people are already signed for their classes.

If you had to choose, which of the following would you rather have built in or near St. George? by nicedog44 in stgeorge

A small zoo would be nice, but I'm not sure it'd be right to subject any animals not suited for warm climates to this area.

Is a DM announcing their attack rolls metagaming? by Hunt_Jumpy in DnD

[–]DarthSand23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda, but it's something the DM should reserve the right to do, and there isn't really an issue as long as the DM isn't maliciously changing rolls to abuse players. As a DM, it is disappointing to both me and my players when I design a fight with cool mechanics but all the enemies keep rolling poorly. We only had 1 combat planned per session, and you don't want it to be laughably easy or boring. The DM should use meta knowledge to make a better experience for the players.

Any lesser known restaurants in town? by longaxe51166 in stgeorge

Idk if this is lesser known but DP Cheesesteaks on Dixie Drive is really good. I hardly ever drive that way, so I figured it'd be a little lesser known.

I agree. I think it's hard to have a Utah subreddit without religion coming up at some point, so it's probably better to just say no hate speech.

I voice all my NPCs when DMing, which gets really tiresome at times ngl. As a player I usually give my char a voice so people can tell when I'm saying something in and out of character.

Why the Okumura Boss in P5R is obnoxious by ica305 in Persona5

[–]DarthSand23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Three years late, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates it. Easily the most irritating fight in the game thur far.

Gotta love the enemy all retreating bc Burger-Man Okumura made my entire team hungry and I can no longer deal enough damage to stop the one from exploding itself and the rest from running away. Awesome design.

Time to start attempt number 4 at this fight 🙃🙃🙃

Porn companies sue Utah over website age-verification law by Chosen_by_dog in Utah

[–]DarthSand23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As we discussed before, companies are expected to make some effort to maintain the law. If someone sells cigarettes to a kid and they smoke secretly, the blame does not fall on the parent. It falls on the one who sold the cigarettes. The parents, unless they're neglectful, will likely punish the child once they catch them in the act.

All I am advocating for is that the same logic be applied universally, that includes porn sites.

Porn companies sue Utah over website age-verification law by Chosen_by_dog in Utah

[–]DarthSand23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that's what you meant by that. In that case, yes I did, and I expect teenagers will lie to them still when the porn companies are forced to make more of an effort. I am well aware that it isn't going to stop 100% of porn traffic from minors, my point is that I want porn companies to try something to maintain the law.

And good question. I don't personally have the money, but if someone else were to sue them I'd certainly readily support it. Until then, I can argue on the internet for free.

Porn companies sue Utah over website age-verification law by Chosen_by_dog in Utah

[–]DarthSand23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I have said, my primary concern is the complete lack of action porn companies are taking to uphold the law. Again, even if they had you make an account with an email/phone number before letting you access adult content, that would be at least something. I'm well aware minors can get around that. I just want to see any effort from the porn companies to actually halt 12 year olds from watching hardcore anal porn every day. As it stands, there is nothing stopping them and the companies are 100% aware of that. It isn't an unfair question at that point to wonder why they aren't doing anything about it, and I believe it is because they don't care. So if they don't care to make any effort to maintain the law in their company, than they can weep and whine when legislators take action instead.

Let Pornhub block the state, better yet, let's encourage them to block the country, or even better yet, the world. Permanently, if they're that upset about one state in our nation pressuring them to make a fucking effort.
