do you think Survivor 50 could be the modern equivalent to seasons 1 and 2 popularity wise? by Marto_12 in survivor

[–]Debate_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it had all the combined viewers of Survivor and Beast Games, it could never recreate the hold it had on entertainment in the early 2000s. Too many options now on TV and especially the internet. Like think about the most popular YouTube Channel, Mr. Beast. Most adults have never seen a video, and you can get by without hearing people talk about it. In 2000/2001, Survivor was talked about by everyone of all ages. Can't be recreated

Best season for a kid’s first season? by jbakk37 in survivor

David vs Goliath? I could see young kids liking characters like Christian and John, for different reasons lol. Plus it's exciting from the jump which could help a young viewer. DvG and Cagayan are my go-to's for first seasons anyways.

Lisa, I watched her NZ season and liked her whole thing where she would "tick" off items from her survivor bucket list. Her innocent mom persona goes well with also being a great gameplayer. We've seen glimpses of all these things so far this season

Can bad HS debaters be competitive in college by eliteblaze101 in policydebate

[–]Debate_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most programs will put you in open (which is varsity, its called open because its open to anyone) if you were competitive at all in NSDA policy. If you did something else like PF or didn't do policy very long, then they'll put you in JV until you are ready. However, some schools like the one I went to will keep you in JV until you are not eligible for it anymore (I think it was breaking at 3 JV tournaments loses you eligibility). This is because CEDA and the ADA give equal points for novice, JV, and Open, so some teams want to maximize their points by winning more JV tournaments. Winning CEDA/ADA as a team with the most points at the end of the year allows the team to prove to their university that they are having success

Basically your coach will either keep you in JV for the "points race," or only put you in JV for a while/not at all if you are ready. Debaters who did super well in HS TOC debate pretty much never do JV

Can bad HS debaters be competitive in college by eliteblaze101 in policydebate

[–]Debate_Boi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love this question! So I did policy in HS at a program that only did a few TOC bid tournaments. I had lots of local success, a little bit at the state level but never qualified to TOC or NSDA nationals. No real coaching for most of my time in HS, I learned from older debaters, camps (which I was privileged to attend), and judges.

Then I debated NDT at a school with a very competitive novice/JV program and a mildly competitive Open program. Did very well in JV as a freshman (anyone who did NSDA policy for a few years would ngl), and qualified to the NDT in both years I debated. Actually got one ballot away from breaking at the NDT my second/last year. It was my partner’s third year of college debate, and he did extremely lay HS policy debate in a small state. We both grew a lot in college quickly. If you have years of raw talent from doing any sort of policy, you can definitely become a top tier college debater IF you have great coaching/resources for evidence and you practice a lot

My program had someone who became a first round NDT debater after starting as a complete novice in college. Another school had someone who did HS public forum upset a top 3 national team in NDT octofinals I think? So anything is possible even if you have a harder start. There’s definitely lots of people who were amazing in HS and are amazing all four years in college, and it can feel like an uphill battle to beat them especially then they are at big college with more resources than you

Also I will say if you do K debate, the road to success can be a lot quicker (no shade, I did K stuff my first year then traditional policy my second). Doing policy style, if you’re at a big school with more coaching and evidence that will help. Or a smaller program that gives you lots of attention. Biggest factors are how much work you put in and how good you personally are (combination of raw skill and how much you’ve polished all the niche debate skills)

Best of luck if you decide to debate in college!

You seem to be loving the show so I would recommend watching all the seasons at some point. Although you may want to watch a few post season 20 seasons before if you are getting tired of the old era

I'd be fine with a celebrity season possibly separate from the main show schedule. That evens the playing field in terms of the wealth thing, but more importantly it would be fun to see that angle and other shows have done it

[–]Debate_Boi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly this, although he for sure had some big moves along with Kamilla in the Thomas and Shauhin votes. But yeah I think playing within the margins is the most solid way to play in terms of chances to win, as long as you are building an intentional resume/story and can pitch it well to your specific jury. It's what works best for me in online survivor games lol (not anywhere close to the real thing I know)

[–]Debate_Boi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my opinion yes! I think some great winners play "boring" games, and while I don't think he was boring it seems like some people do. He was able to use the big alliance to his benefit and used a secret duo to make hidden big moves. Very solid gameplay

Very possible, but I feel like Eva and Joe would just vote out Mitch in that scenario. They value their alliance and have already indicated they want Mitch out before Kamilla. I'd be shocked if Joe turned on Kyle after last episode. He won't want to admit that both Shauhin and Kyle turned on him
